Recently replaced the timing components on a new to me 2010 passat with a ccta engine. after about 500 miles since repair i'm receiving a low oil pressure light every 200-400 miles and it usually only beeps once under 2k rprms. There are no metal contaminants in the oil pan and I only get the low oil pressure light when the engine is hot. This repair was made due to a failed timing chain tensioner and bent valves.
with all of the above and below stated I have removed the balance shafts for inspection, one appears to be fine but the exhaust side balance shaft has noticeable end play. my main questions is should there be and end play in either of the balance shafts? Or is there an easy way to tell once removed if they are at fault of the low oil pressure?
2010 passat ccta 92,xxx miles
.oil pressure is 33psi @2k rpm 12 psi @ idle (hot)
.screen in cam bridge was blown out and found sitting on cylinder head (removed)
.oem filter and castrol 5w40 oil being used
.oil pressure switch has been replaced (was leaking oil)
I've discovered a balance shaft failure that I wanted to share with the group. I have a 2.0 TFSI CAEB motor in a B8 (2009) Audi A4. It developed a low oil pressure problem. I checked it with a gauge and it was out of spec at idle only (should be 17psig or higher and I measured about 12 psig). Above idle it met spec at the higher rpm ratings. I pulled the oil pan and found aluminum shavings in the pickup tube. I chased a few other items that I won't bore you with here, but it turned out to be the intake side balance shaft. It was not obvious because the damage was inside the bearing housing meaning I had to disassemble the shaft in order to find the problem. The other item to check if you find this problem is to verify that passages are clear. I made a drive gear for my drill to run the oil pump using the gear from the balance shaft, put some oil in the pan and ran the pump. This verified flow to the supply ports on the front and rear of the balance shaft (the supply ports are on the crankshaft side of the intake side balance shaft). It looks like oil returns to the pan through large openings under the balance shaft.

So, the right side of the picture? (not my engine) Did you replace it with a new one? I have an A3 CCTA engine and it's transverse so I'll have to pull the engine to check this.
Any updates ChattVW? I'm having the same exact symptoms (sporadic short duration oil pressure warning at about 1700 rpm only when warmed up) on an '11 Tiguan and am considering opening it up for a balance shaft inspection. I already replaced the oil pump to no avail. It is frustrating, I feel like I'm just throwing parts at it without being able to prove what the problem is. Nothing would please me more actually than to pull the balance shafts and see a big wad of junk clogging the screens.
I just finished tonight and I am sad to say, it did not solve my oil pressure problem. The intake balance shaft did have clogged and damaged oil passages and its bearings were shot. I was so happy when I pulled it out because I thought for sure since it was broken, I was on the right path. Sadly the warning lamp still illuminates and my gauge indicates across the board pressures below spec. I am not sure what's next to solve this issue.
I’m having same issue on my 2013 GLI. Very random but extremely frustrating. Also changed oil pressure sensor. I’ve also been dealing with engine randomly shutting off which is a whole other can on worm. Who knows maybe they’re related. Today I actually had issues starting up after work plus same oil pressure message flashing. Let the car rest for a Minute and it fired right back up. I’m at a loss.
Hey riduan1iss, thanks for your reply. I thought your predicament/solution was unusual. Can you tell me your engine code, CCTA? And did you see any engine light or only the low oil pressure warning light?
Same problem here, I've replaced the timing chain and tensioner but not because they went out, just preemptive. I've replaced oil pressure sensor and oil level sensor. Tested oil pressure and it seems fine. Part of me is like, it's a false problem but it's still aggravating and I'm still a little leery there's some underlying problem. :banghead:
I'll be taking my balance shafts out next week (which means replacing them no matter what). I'll share what I learn. It's a very frustrating situation for sure. I am pretty confident clogged balance shaft screens are the root cause but there is no way to prove it without taking them out.
What year would be condsidered a “Gen 1”?
And what happens to be the cause then?
I just got my car back from timing chain yesterday and the sensor has been going off even after replacing oil and oil filter this morning.
This os related to excessive gap on shaft which leads to oil leakage. By analyzing old parts and new VW replacement parts we see that original ones have 0.02mm interference on 2 upper diameters of the shaft and must be assembled with “hammer” to assure tightness. New parts have 0.02-0.03mm gap and assemble easily by hand and can’t assure tightness leading do leakage.
Interesting ….. I heard of someone putting them in the freezer overnight and had to use a hammer …. I didn’t end up replacing the balance shafts but I know the exhaust side’s plastic covering disintegrated. ( engine was overheated bad )
It could be just the oil pressure sensor / I bought a cheapo from Auto Zone & blew it out in like a week / literally it was spewing oil out the front of it
I am seeing a bunch of this balance shaft things - what was everyone's symptoms? Mine is EPC light flash at 1.5-1.7 rpms. Timing chain noisy - even though it is a new chain
Geez what VW spec oil are you guys using? Not the weight, the Spec like VW505 01 or 507 00 etc. I firmly believe that most VW engine issues are directly related to failure to use the correct spec. It is so important but usually overlooked, even the dealers can get it right on mine not once but twice in a row.
