Thread: 2017 GTI BSM no audible- How to add audible?

    1. 06-20-2018 10:52 AM #1
My 2017 GTI has BSM but visual only. My Mazda CX5 had visual (same fast flash with turn signal and vehicle in blind spot), but also had an audible alert that would beep (only with turn signal on and car in blind spot). Not sure if 2018 is same.

Would it be possible to wire in some kind of audible alert into the GTI BSM similar to Mazda one? Thx for any suggestions

As jonnyg said, not available in Mk7 (or 7.5). I'm sure you can splice a small speaker into the BSM circuit to have it be audible, but I don't know how you would make it so that it only sounds when you signal and not every time BSM lights up (not to mention how ghetto that setup would likely look). Or a much simpler solution is to adjust your mirrors so you don't have a blind spot anymore, then you don't need BSM audible or not.

I sometimes get a warning. Sounds like a blaring horn tho .

This guy wired some LED strips to his BSM. As mentioned, you could probably use some sort of small speaker, but the finished product could look rough.

      Edit: Check out post #30

That's an interesting solution. I wonder which wires were used for the LED (and if there is a separate wire that sends the faster flashing when turn signal is on and car is in blind spot)? I could also run a wire up the window pillar and mount a tiny speaker up high and behind visor...

Is there a 2017 wiring diagram floating around the internet?

Could this be tied into the front collision warning beep and red warning?

This is actually something that I love in my GTI over my wife's Elantra. All the safety features are beeping off constantly. I prefer the visual. Although I do agree a beep when the BSM is flashing would have benefits for those that like that.

The answer is what other carmakers have discovered: beep if there's a car there AND the driver hit the turn signal.

Voila. Simple, easy, extremely effective, keeps the driver's eyes on the road ahead where they belong.
Yeah that's what I meant. Apologies if it was confusing. Right now the bsm light flashes rapidly when it detects a car and the signal is used. That's how the elantra is. But it also beeps for lane keep and forward warning constantly.

hmm...... of course you could go to the hassle of using an electronic AND gate and then couple it to a driver circuit to run a buzzer - but that's too complicated and you would need to generate 5V. Much simpler to just use 2 x micro relays that run directly off +12 Volts like this:

As you can see a defacto AND gate is generated by the circuit: to operate the buzzer it needs both the turn signal repeater LED on the mirror AND the BSM LED (also on the mirror) to light-up. Stuff the 2 x relays somewhere in the driver door cavity together with the buzzer - run wires into the driver door cavity from the 2 x LEDs in the driver side mirror. The buzzer will oscillate ON/OFF in unison with turn signal for added emphasis!!

      Easy-peazy

What about this? It appeared after enabling developer mode for module 5F.

      OMG OMG OMG for real??!?!

And looking at your signature/profile, this is a 2016 Golf? I'm hoping my 2017 has this as well.

WT#?!? How did you enable developer mode, what section is that in..? Did it work, are you getting an audible warning..?

      OBDeleven instruction below
      Module: 5F (Information electronics)
      Change Service → Development mode
      Adaptation → Channel: Developer Mode
      New value: active

YT tutorial here (enabling hidden menu with OBDeleven).

After enabling it I didn't had to reboot the headunit, just went to CAR > SETUP and a lot of options were already there. Not only in driver assistance submenu, but also interior lights...
My best guess is that underneath the VW theme, MIB2 device can support all Audi/Seat/Skoda/VW features. Most of it is disabled/hidden but in developer mode these are back visible. For example there are two separate sections for Side Assist and Blind Spot Monitoring (pic below). SA might be for Audi only and BSM for VW/Seat/Skoda, with different name/communication protocol/driver adjustments.

Before you ask: I don't know yet how to enable those extra features outside of developer mode. I'm not even sure if these options can be enabled and if will be working as expected.

I switched from BMW E87 to Golf MK7 2 month ago and, to be honest, I'm surprised that I'm the first one (?) that discovered these extra options.

If you turn off developer mode after enabling the audible BSM, does the audible BSM setting still "stick" even though the option is no longer visible in the head unit? Or do we have to leave 5F in developer mode permanently for this?

The thing is that when enabling developer mode the Warning Sound option was already on. No test drive performed with developer mode on yet to check if there's any difference.

I was able to turn on developer mode. I am pretty sure it's on correctly because I can now get the green engineering menu. However the audible alert setting for the blind spot monitoring still does not display. 2017 Golf with 6.5" Composition Media here.

Personally I love the no beepy. We also have a CX-5 and I find it beeps too often to the point you’re just tuning it out.

After enabling developer mode I did not reboot the system. Just went to CAR > SETUP.

Anyone else try this yet with a US-spec Mk7 and have different results than I do? I still have the green engineering menu on mine but no BSM audible setting.
