Successfully installed and coded the Euro spec LED tail lights to my FL 2018 Golf wagon.

A bit of background info: the N/A & Canadian face-lifted (MY2018) have the new LED tails, with the brake and turn signal combined with red color in typical Big3 fashion of yesteryears. Didn't like it, and set-off to procure Euro tails for the retrofit.
I did the outer tails only as I didn't care for fog light. Needed was the outer tails, new adapter harness and coding. (Same procedure I assume for the regular Golf/GTI/R)

      OEM Euro Tail Lights:
      - Part # 5G9-945-095-E (left) & 5G9-945-096-E (right)
      - Harness (from user ZERO815)

Sorry to revive an old thread.

I assume the part #s you ordered would match to an '18 (US) Golf R too. I was thinking about this instead of the upgraded dynamic tail lamps....

      Thanks.

Oh, and is there a purpose for the outer-most clear section of the amber blinker. It appears clear in the video, but not flashing/lit.

      Thanks

Wagons and Golf R’s don’t use the same parts. The shape is slightly different and so is the part number.

Thanks for the R part numbers. I was 90% sure I remembered that the shapes were different.

Surprisingly these cost a little MORE than the 7.5 dynamic tails (when looking at just the outers).

Can't decide what I want to do. I have a right hand set of the 7.5 dynamics, and just need the left. Probably tough to resell half a set to defray the cost of going this route.

Either way, I'll be in touch for a harness.

      Interesting.

The Valeo versions are much cheaper....

There is nothing in that section, as they don't use side markers in Europe.
Mine are made by Valeo - Made in Poland.

Thanks - I forgot about the no side marker requirement in Europe.

I have to say - I'm seriously on the fence. This is a much cheaper way to get amber turn signals, especially using the Valeo units.

They lack the cool factor of the dynamic tails available for the R, but it would certainly be "unique"

They are definitely unique in the US. I almost bought a set this summer while I was in Germany. Sadly one light was damaged so I walked away.

I feel like I saw a comment somewhere, but I do worry that with this mod there isn't enough brake like to be noticeable. Would love to see a video of these at night.

If I didn't have $ into one half the Euro set I'd be tempted to just go for it,

Tape off the blinker section with black electrical tape and check if you like the visibility of the brake lights during day and night.

If it's good enough for Europe, I'm sure it's just fine on this side too.

Have you seen the red brake/turn signal combo on the new Tesla Model 3? it's half the size of my brake lights in height, with same width....

      I'm definitely torn.

If I didn't have $ sunk into a half set the Euro 7.5 (dynamic) tails, or if I'd seen this thread first I'd be more apt to go this route. The cost of the other half of the dynamics is still about 1/3 more than this mod.

Question is if I go this route could I recoup what I spent on the dynamics already, or could I get more selling the full set of my stock tails to defray the dynamics.

      ...sigh...

      Decisions....

It looks to me after removing mine that you *may* be able to access the LED board in our NA 2018 LED tails. The tail lens is clear from the inside that I can see peaking through the gap near the harness connector so it's the same plastic body as the euro version, just red LEDs instead of amber. How cool if you could just replace the LEDs with amber ones and then code the tails to work like that where the brake is only the top bit and the lower bit is the blinker..would be way cheaper than new lights and wiring harnesses...

There are 4 torx screws in the light housing. I removed them but was scared to start prying on things...I have to believe that you can disassemble the housing. Anyone messed with it?

Again, reviving a dead thread but also curious about this and if the idea of replacing the LED bulbs themselves went anywhere.

Why on earth wouldn't VW use the entire upper section of the lights for brake lights, just at a higher brightness than running lights? Unbelievable. Looks like a 90s offroader in the EU with the 2 brake lights relocated into the bumper.

Anyone know the coding for non-amber facelift lights? I tried to copy the coding used here but it didn't work... I want to try the European brake light functionality (just the small bright leds) without having the amber outer lights.

      Bringing this back up again...

KarstGeo were you ever able to figure this out? Would much prefer to not have to buy new tail light outers and have a harness made.

following this. I'm determined to run ambers up front and amber signals in the rear and want to keep the look of the tail lights I have now.

I think I'd like to try this as well, but I'm curious if you got it working... I'd like to try it with the factory NA tail lights that I have.

Message ZERO815 on this thread, he will provide you with a direct fit adapter harness and coding. Very easy, I did mine in 15 Min.

Get the OEM tails from www.cars245.com And I would suggest to go with the Valeo units, they're the same as the VW units but less money.
