Even though it was missing only one wheel(main carriage), a belly landing was the best solution correct? If it landed with its gear down, the aircraft would have just pitched in one direction into the dirt and cartwheeled into flames?
I know that Air Force aircraft has arresting gear. I thought it was for emergency landings. But from what I got from the video, the arresting wire is for aborting a take off? So with this incident, the F-111 make its approach where the arresting wires were at the beginning of the runway correct? Like on a aircraft carrier.
Also, why didn't they foamed the runway? I would figure that would minimize the spark. Or maybe I've watched too much TV
