Nice looking E46, I'd buy it and I don't even need a car.

What was the noise on the 4runner? Was it a clunk when coming to a complete stop and/or a clunk when starting from a stop?
It wasn't a clunk. It sounded similar to a squeak, but then it got worse and worse, and it was in the driveline. Would get worse with speed.

Initially I thought it was U-Joints, but those checked out on both front and rear driveshafts. Then we stuck it in AWD, then in 4Hi, and then 4Lo, and the sound got absolutely horrid.

Honestly, had this car not popped up I probably would have kept it and fixed it. But once I saw a manuel E46 for a price that was laughable it was pretty easy to let it go.

I should have kept the 4Runner and just had them both, but right now I wouldn't fix it for a long time. Good news is that I sold it to a friend, and he's planning on keeping it all winter instead of flipping it. So come this spring when he's ready to get rid of it I told him to holler at me. I may buy it back then. We're expecting our second child in the end of January and my wife is planning on taking off a full eight weeks of no pay. Between that, and the cost of the birth, I'm trying to be pretty tight with money.

In reality, it was more my wife saying "You're not going to buy another car when yours is broke, are you?"

Okay, yep, I'll sell it and buy this one.

That's one way to get a much nicer steering wheel.

      My wife said that once.
I came back with 3 cars and only one of those running.
      That was a fun week.

Interesting, it definitely sounds t-case related. But you made some money on the rig so it all worked out.

I'm intrigued by the E46 though. I'm jonesing to get back into something cheap-ish, Manuel, and fun-ish in the not too distant future. An E46 could fill that role.

The car I wanted when I was 18 was an E46. The car I could afford was a 2003.5 MkIV Jetta 1.8T, I was so jealous of the RWD.

I'm sitting in the airport waiting for my flight. Soon.

Never buy a used car in the dark. Or travel in Chicago after dark.

      Best wishes.

How do you feel about paying for a car sight unseen, and then driving it home 550 miles?

The best part of that is that she didn't put her Google Maps app in "walking" mode. So it kept redirecting us trying to get us on a street because it assumed we were in a car.

Half way there I asked to see her phone " What the hell babe?! These are driving directions, not walking!"

      Good night for sure.

      The other car I wanted when I was 18 was a 3rd gen 4Runner.

It's like Brandon is handing me gifts at this point.

I brought the 4Runner back from a sure death. The guy I sold it to is going to drive it through the winter and then list it for $5,500.

      Good for him.

I get bored pretty quick with cars if I run out of things to do.

Can't wait to drive the E46 home.

Good luck! I've done two fly/drives on old BMWs it is always a thrill. Both involved unexpected snow on less than ideal tires.

I think it's because most people know that a pregnant woman will cut you open like a bag of rice and everybody will be convinced that it's not at all her fault. Even if she guts some guy, his wife or girlfriend will give them a hug and say, oh, he probably deserved it, you alright, hon?

      Just got home.

It was snowing when I left Chicago, nothing was sticking to the ground. The further I got from the city center the colder it got, and the roads were just starting to get a little slick. Made it out just in time. Made it to STL and it was 50* F and mostly sunny.

Initial impressions of the car after driving it 500 miles.

      The steering is fantastic.

The I6 M54 is the smoothest motor I've ever operated. It's not a powerful engine by any means, but it's certainly not under-powered in the 325i. The lack of power isn't something that I feel takes away from the driving experience.

Which brings me to my next point, overall it's just a really well balanced car. It was fun to throw into the corners and I got closer to home, and felt extremely confident in doing so.

Also, the car is extremely tight, as in it almost feels brand new. No squeaks, rattles, etc. All the interior lights work, it shifts well, doors shut with a heavy thud. Very happy I bought this. My commute is going to be a lot more fun.

I'd totally recommend everyone buy an E46 for $1,500 if it presents itself. The less owners and mileage the better.

Immediate plans are fluid flush/change oil, then find a cup kit, some decent tires, and possibly a short shifter. These things are gonna be on the side burner for a while though, right now I just need to drive it.

I reset the trip computer leaving STL and between there and home (roughly 230 miles) I averaged a speed of 71.8MPH and 28.9MPG. Not too shabby. With the size of the fuel tank on this thing (16.6 gallons!) and the fuel mileage you can easily get 400 miles out of a tank before you need to worry about filling up again.

Your daily drive to work just became fun.

Goes to cars.com for a look.

Edit: The prices I found for a car similar to yours is many time what you paid.
