Yes and no, I mean by this logic the civic should now be the accord and the ranger should be an F150. Just because all modern vehicles are larger doesn't mean they changed class. Oh it's the same size as this thing from 50 years ago when every vehicle has gotten larger just seems like a weird justification.

the wheel base ranged from 120-165, this is I"m going to guess about 132? but it is a 4 door giving it that jump vs the 2 door J series which then also had a full size bed vs this 5ft bed. Make it a 2 door and I bet its sub 120. So by that it is about the same size but "size" isn't the only thing that defines a truck.

Width is close, at about 1" less on the new one, but a CJ to a JL has grown by about 6" in width so had a J series continued to today it would have likely grown by at least that much.

The J series had a ~2 ton payload limit depending on version vs this under 1 ton (still good but not even close to the same) So its kind of a wimp in that department and not up to the "size" of the gladiator.

The J series Gladiator was meant to compete with other full size trucks, this is not. It is still an S10 (colorado)/ranger sized truck. A modern J series would have been much larger than what this is. The name is the name clearly, nothing we say is going to change that, this just doesn't seem to really fill the shoes of the original one.

Chris, I tend to like the 2-door better because of the shorter wheelbase (which is arguably better for some angles), but the pic I posted look awesome though. If I do get a JL in a few years, I would get the 4-door and just get rid of the body components and customize it exactly like the one I posted. Although I would paint it either a matte black or matte dark gray similar to the carbon steel on my GTI.

How are you stretching your TJ? Are you physically cutting the frame and extending it?

It's cool and all, but I hope it steals a crapload of sales from the JLU so my beloved JLU is rarer.

My Jeep is currently packed to the gills ready in the parking lot to set off for my hunting trip this afternoon

Same I love the look of the 2 door but at the length of the LJ or JkU/JLU. I'm normally not even a 2 door guy just like the look better on these. The JK8 kit I noted above basically did what that green one does, wonder if they just used some of those parts and modified for the JL??

If you google TJ6 or TJ-6 you can find some builds to better describe it. But yeah you cut it right after the doors and extend the frame ~12" plus patch in the body or use an LJ tub with modified wheel wells. The LJ was like 12" longer but they split it in wheel base and body. So you keep the TJ departure angle but have a worse break over than the LJ, for me I want the wheel base and can deal with that as it is still under the JK/JL Unlimited wheel base. Just can't justify the cost yet as the top I want is 4grand... Doing a pickup kind of appeals to me but I like the idea of it all being enclosed as one.

But now that this exists the gladiator probably just makes more sense. We'll see how I feel in a 2 years when the diesel is out and whether i've cut mine in half yet

I originally only wanted a 2DR JL, because agreed, they look way better.

That said, you can haul 4 people OR their luggage in a 2 door, not both, so I had to go 4DR and it's just fine as a consolation prize. If you dont have 2 kids and a wife though, totally 2DR all the way.

yup I don't even have my rear seat anymore and even the belts are removed, only living things ever back there are the dogs. LJ was a good compromise of 2 door look with more cargo space and still room to keep the back seat.

I do think the length of the unlimited from the side with a hartop looks a little tougher, not that it looks like a hummer but more hummer like, its the length to boxiness ratio. Soft top or topless the 2 door wins in the looks department. Stock height 4 door with the doors removed and no top looks like an airport tram with a roll bar. Sadly I don't think this gladiator with no doors will look great.

This thread had me wondering if anyone made a half-cab kit for the previous "Unlimited" LJ's... of course they do.

Just google "jscherb jeep" to see all his nutty versions he has created.

That's all the Jscherb stuff, he licenses it to gr8tops for manufacturing/sale. Like Dinoot with the trailers and I think he has a few other things out there.

What would be cool is how with the JL soft top you can pull out all the windows.. but if they made a bump/safari style hard top that you can leave the top in place and swap between the stock soft sides and the aftermarket hard panels.

there is a smitybuilt JKU safari top, not quite as awesome looking as the gr8tops TJ/LJ ones and not modular but still cool and much cheaper, bet they make a JL one.

ETA.. also this is how thought out the Jscherb stuff is if I remember correctly the two trailer tub sizes are the same size as the safari hard tops for the TJ and LJ I don't think gr8tops will sell you just the top (maybe) but in theory you could remove it and bolt it to your dinoot trailer.

As I said before, if they weren't going to call it Scrambler they should call it "Over Easy". You could also outfit a hunting version and call it the Jeep Poacher. The hard core off-roaders could have a Hard Boiled edition and mall crawlers would be soft boiled. Soft top versions would have the "Sunny Side Up" option.

      Okay, I'm done. That's all I got.

Are they going to rename the Compass the Omelette? Or maybe the Egg Salad? Maybe a special Military version sold only in CT called the Benedict?

Urban camping, suburban camping, suburban but kind of urban like since someone walking to dinner might see you pooping in a bucket camping and if people can walk to dinner its urban? or actual camping?

How many billions in revenue did Jeep leave on the table in the last 14 years? A **** ton.

Midsize trucks were assumed to be dead. The S-10, Ranger, and Dakota were America's midsize trucks, all were discontinued. Why would Jeep sell a midsize truck in an environment all the big players had left for dead? They made a business decision that was probably well justified in the mid 2000's and after the recession hit in 2008 along with record high gas prices it probably looked very smart to have not devoted resources to a niche midsize Jeep truck. The Chrysler part of what is now FCA has had money problems for years, they did what they had to do to keep the business low risk and alive. It's only in the recent years we've seen the Colorado introduced and find success, the Ranger be stated as returning to the US, and now FCAs entry into midsize trucks is the Gladiator. Timing matters, and between Chrysler's ownership & financial problems and the global recession, they did what was most sensible.

I dunno. Wrangler sales have been increasing for years, and a pickup definitely cannibalizes sales of the normal model.

The real question is, how much of a premium can Jeep charge for the pickup? Usually pickups are cheaper than their SUV equivalents.
