I get it, no one wants to see their home misrepresented, I sympathize.

You’re just expecting too much from these 3 in that way.

      IMO
Agreed. Disparaging the Exorcist for having "stock brakes, stock suspension, and stock tires with 1,000hp" made me chuckle. It started off as a ZL1, not a rental spec 4 cylinder car so the statement is a little eye rolling, but hey, it's the three of them. I watch to be entertained, not to learn anything.

Especially when they could have been disparaging it for having to run on 104 Octane. Stuff is $10/gal around here and I only know of two places that sell it. What a pain in the ass.

They go to plenty of places that are not savory or wealthy and not just harp on the ****ty part of those places. They come to Detroit and all they want talk about is the ****ty old plants and how the city is abandoned and no one is around(pretty untrue there neither). Considering also they are literally within a stones throw away from largely revived downtown and midtown for most of their shots, and that you can clearly see people around there.

10-15 years is a long ass time to be wrapped around some old ass stereotype of a place. I left Taipei in 1997 and the first time I went back in 2009 it feels like a different place. I live in Toronto for the next 11 years after 1997 and the place changes a lot in the time, and faster now that I left there. The skyline is completely different now compare to when I went to univerity there in early 2000s. Detroit is not like it was back when Clarkson supposedly got held up at Gunpoint back in the days, and all he wants is to look for the ****ty part of what he remembered back.

Anthony Bourdain's show did a Detroit episode too, and he did his ruin porn as well, but he also showed what his show supposed to, food, from different places, different neighborhood, interacted with people. This is a car show, despite what they might have thought, plenty of car things are around the area, and they touched none of that. Aside from just promoting the same old shtick.

Also Indonesia is not a city....and if you've been there you'll know it has plenty more than rainy temples....post card tourism is not tourism...
You've got to relax a bit man. It's all done in humor the way they do with every city they go to, place they visit or even the reviews they do on cars. It's comedy, not a documentary. Learn to laugh at yourself, it makes life less stressful.

What's more they even did a short segment where they went downtown, said it was too nice, and then go back to the suburbs. I'm OK with it.

      ^^^ totally wrong.

They used 3 cars made from companies with their respective HQs* in Detroit, I think they did exactly what they intended.

This. Clarkson has basically S___ on every single place he's ever visited in one way or another. If you want real life and facts, watch Ken Burns...this is entertainment 101.

I really liked the first episode and that they spent an entire episode giving american-style performance cars some attention---not just Hammond showing up with a mustang whereas the others have something european. Solid episode and made me want to drive all three. I like that they included either reasonably modified versions or factory special versions of the more standard, sedate version that most people buy. I liked that they made a point to highlight---in a British sort of way---the performance trunk for the demon. Just a great episode. I suppose I can understand that some resident are upset that the show made it seem like the city is still a crumbling shadow of its former self. But in some ways it is. In a weird way, I suppose, seeing some of the areas in detroit has makes me want to drive up there and see things for myself. The history of the city is precisely the type of history I like.

That episode had me spending over an hour looking at how to buy a house in Detroit.

Sadly, it looks like even a cheap house in a neighbourhood that is on the way up requires one to not only live in it and/or have a renter, but bring it up to code in about a 6-month period. I get it, they don't want speculators to sit on the sidelines and wait while the land goes (further) to crap.

Also, apparently there was only around 1,000 mortgages green-lit in Detroit last year. That's it. 1,000!

The point being that bank confidence was, and still is, fairly low. It's a sign things are (very slowly) turning around.

      Those 3 cars were fun.

The Senna may be a speed marvel but boy is it ugly.
agreed, and Clarkson had to give up the smokes because of Pneumonia or something like that earlier in 2018. He was in the hospital for some time.

Guess they caught it just in time.

I'm surprised it took this long for the bridge to go though...the plant has been closed (and I assume without maintenance) since 1958 or so?

My thoughts on what I think was my favorite episode of the show so far, as a whole.

      - I think the “ruin porn” people are pretending to not have seen that the show specifically points out that there are parts of Detroit that are thriving, including even driving through downtown areas showing how “hipster”, clean, and upscale... much to Clarkson’s lament.

      - I’m surprised Hammond didn’t at least mention the fact that he’s in an ENTIRELY STOCK car, especially during things like the sound test... the fact that the stock Demon can hang with those “tuner specials” is pretty outrageous. Also, I’m imagining that Dodge was more concerned with the Demon not being able to hang with the other two in a “street race” against the other two without the track crate prep so that explains their “please don’t race it on the street” even though it was clearly a closed course (you can see the police cars blocking traffic and the barricades at the other end of the “strip”).

      - To everyone asking if May sand-bagged the race against Clarkson, even if just at first... want to know how I know you’ve never driven a 1,000 horsepower car in a drag race? It would take A LOT of practice before you’d be near the quickest drag times. I’m actually surprised that May was able to consistently beat the Mustang after the first run. 1,000 horsepower is NUTS at full throttle, especially the first 60’.

That factory would cost a fortune to tear down it's most like filled with asbestos and all types of lead paint.
