I don't know how the illustrator came up with that front bumper design, based on the spy shots we've seen

I like the red motor1 rendering!

Here is another one, but I like the red one better.

But I wonder if the lower grill will look more like this one.

Because the front bumpers with the giant mouth we've seen are just horrible...hopefully they do something similar on the GTI / R version as shown on the rendering.

Horrible or not, the bigmouth bumpers are real. Get used to them.

That wing seems unusually 'ricer' for the mature and subdued GTI/R. Some special performance R-trim?

The test GTIs are not running this wing. I suppose it could be the TCR trim

Crazy to me anyone would take the $10,000 more expensive R when you can get the more fun to drive GTI and get a tune to bring it up to R power levels.

But yeah 240 horses out the gate is awesome.

      Dude

Awd.. traction... R is overpriced compared to gti, but don't ever say gti is a better car..

The AWD is the exact reason why the R is less fun to drive. I didnt say the GTI was the better car I said it was more fun to drive. Which it is.

Disagree. Unless you love wheel hop. And torque steer. In which case yes, the GTI is way more fun to drive.

Don't talk so mean about Honda/Acura.

    16. 01-20-2020 12:54 PM #940
The awd makes the car too tame and refined in the corners, it is almost boring. The FWD gti with the LSD is the better handling car. It is lighter and funner to toss around corners. The 2 negatives you mention, wheel hop and torque steer are straight line problems. If all you care about is 1/4 times than of course the R will be better.

imo a GTI feels closer to an old rabbit while an R feels like an Audi.

It is just an opinion but I know others share it as well.

Fair, and I guess that's why I like the R more after having two GTIs. But the R is still WAAAAAY more fun than an S3.

Does anyone know the powerplant in the mk8? Is it just EA888 gen 3/4 or what?

stiffer engine mount drastically reduces wheel hop and with aftermarket suspension i found torque steering to be pretty minimal. It all boils down to what you want out of those car. Both are terrific cars and have their pro's and cons.

Let's hope they put a stronger clutch in the car compared to the crap they put in the Mk7 GTI and R.

It's not really $10k more when you compare apples to apples on trim levels. There's no equivalent to the base spec cloth seat GTI in R trim. The R is more like a loaded autobahn in terms of equipment, which makes the price difference more like $5k. Plus, you make a lot of that up on the back end due to the better depreciation curve on the R. If you are into tuning, the R will go way past GTI power levels with the bigger turbo- and it will actually have hope of putting that extra power down.

Yes. That weak sauce clutch really was the Achilles heel for those into rowing your own, and was part of what steered me away from the R. It was nothing but cost cutting as they put the same one in all Golfs, which meant the R was not far off the limit even at stock power levels.

Yeah but im not. Im comparing an avg base GTI at like 28-30k to an R which is 40k+

Indisputable. But not everyone wants to put 400 down to the wheels street driving.
