Please don't flame me, but it's a friend who spoke to Scott Keough shortly before announcing his move from Audi to VW.

Hate to say it, but he's not wrong. I had a similar reaction to your comparison and should have said something too.

Plot twist - it's actually a test mule for the next Porsche 918.

To me the Mk VI is the best looking of the whole series. Too bad it didn't have quite the HP potential of the Mk VII and beyond. The should go back the the sexy smooth lines of the Mk VI again IMO.

The assessment of the "face" is spot-on, though. Definitely derpy.

No way, this was the best one: Sharp lines, quad headlights, factory BBS wheels, and lots of contrasting black trim.

It definitely looks frumpy up front. That C&D render with the lowered front, raised shoulder line and camera angle gives it an almost Camaro chop top look. I'm sure it'll be an excellent car, but I'm not sure I agree with raking the rear windshield as it cuts down on usable hatch space.

I've have similar thoughts about the hatch window when I see the Porsche Cayenne. A boxier back is better for cargo, but maybe not for aerodynamics?

The old Golfs also had very raked hatch windows! I think more raked than my MKVI

Q: If this is the MK8, will VW follow the tech industry and go straight to the MKX after this?

Also, kudos to those sticking up for those Down's kids.

And then they can make the MKX Plus or MKX Max, a larger more SUV-like version of the Golf! It will look just like a Porsche Cayenne!

The older Golfs also had more upright windshields and front-end. I think the less-raked look works better on the newer cars.

What I appreciate about the GTI is that there hasn't really been a stinker and I don't expect VW to buck that trend.
I like the looks of all the generations, though the mk4 is something of an awkward middle child of the generations.

Having owned quite a few Golfs I'll weight in.

From BEST to WORST design (I owned the bolded ones)

      Mk2
      Mk1
      Mk4
      Mk3
      Mk7
      Mk6
      Mk5
