I'd like to see the car in some other colors before deciding if I like it or not. I hate that gold mustard color VW seems to love lately.

If the R really does come with a turbo 6, that would be a very interesting proposition. Unfortunately my gut says even if by some weird chance it gets the big motor, it will be DSG only

It reminds me more of what I think of as a Polo. I know they're similar to the Golf, but in addition to being smaller they always looked less sporty to me.

It needs a less sloping front end.
It should have just basically been the same proportions/shape of a Golf, but just scaled a few percent.

Funny, when I searched Polo before my post I saw a number of photos that went against my memories of the car. It seems it does come in many sporty versions! Your photo clearly shows that the Polo can be a sporty little car!

I love the idea of the Polo GTI and wish it could be offered in the States. I have never had an opportunity to drive one but I am betting it would be a great city/commuter car that could also take on some twisty country roads on weekends.

Maybe like a Ford Fiesta! They get great reviews for some qualities, but seem to lack more civilize characteristics I enjoy in a VW GTI or my Golf TDI. If a Polo GTI was truly just a smaller version of the GTI, it could be amazing. That said, I think the Golf/GTI is small enough for me.

I suspect we're going to see a design very closely aligned with the new Polo.

Totally agree. That little piece of side glass is poor design in my opinion. It’s an afterthought and not to mention would be pain in the a$$ to clean.

The shape, yes. It’d be much, much larger. (I’m sure you know that)

I don't own a car with one, but I like that little windows, at least conceptually. I don't know what the objection is. Thick pillars are the worst and the little windows let some extra light in.

If VW lifted it, installed some cladding, and called it a crossover, they might sell more than a handful of them. However, it would probably be at the cost of Tiquan sales.

Agree, but the MK3 GTI VR6 probably had the worst suspension and brakes of all the GTIs. I owned a red '98 DE leftover. The VR with the the suitcase muffler deleted sounded great though!

MK5 didn't look like a Golf to me. I though it looked really strange. The front end was a mess. A total mish-mash of design cues. The big Audi style grill didn't jive with the headlight shape. The tail lights looked like they belonged on a different brand of car. Just my $.02 though...beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Dem feels . I too had a 92 16v Montana green with BBS and Recaros. My first car (not something that was a hand me down). I worked my butt to get it and sold it 2 years later for more than I bought it for (got a VR6). I miss it so much. Every single time I drive a GTI I just feel at home. No matter the generation. They will always have a special place in my heart that no other car will ever fill .

EDIT: Found Polaroids of my VR and 16v...Damn I am old.
