Now that you mention it, I bought my cassette copy of In Step on a trip to Iowa visiting my dad. The cashier at the record store gushed over the album. Ironically, it was never my favorite as I felt it was a little over-produced. I only knew who Malmsteen through a guitar-head I knew in HS. He played me some of the guy's work and I never got into it. I appreciated the classical influence, but thought the metal part completely overwhelmed it.

In the spirit of the conversation, and to get back on topic, here's one I always liked:

I'm sure everyone knows this one well:

Ry Cooder playing, and Steve Vai pretending to fail at playing, Capricio No 5 by Paganini in the movie Crossroads:

I don't think I ever considered where that actually came from before. If you listen to a violin rendition, you can hear many of the elements that went into it. IMO, it was pretty clever for the writers to come up with something outside of the box like that to cover.

OTOH, when you think about it, symphonies these days are technically mostly just 1700s and 1800s pop cover bands.

Didn't go through the whole thread so I hope this isn't a repost, but Charles Bradley's cover of Changes by Black Sabbath has to be at the top, imo.

My God... How am I just now hearing this, four years later? For that matter, almost fifty years after the original came out and almost thirty after I first heard it, I feel like I'm just now hearing the song as it was meant to be.
