I shrugged this one off at first but it's a little annoying. Anyone else feel like the rear end is clunky? I hear a noise over the smallest bumps. This is my first torsion beam car so maybe it's a characteristic of this setup?

Knowing there was a recall that dropped the other day for rear springs affecting about 1200 jettas, I'm now wondering if this is not normal.

Nope, mine is dead silent. I'd have that checked out.

you guys had me worried but I just drove another one around the lot and it sounds the same as mine. I'll still have it checked out.

Mine's starting to clunk and my driver window also doesn't auto up or down anymore so I guess its time for warranty work. Maybe our cars are part of the broken spring recall? The noise kind of reminds me of when my Mercedes had a broken front spring.

To me it's a knocking similar to when a front strut isn't tightened down all the way. Luckily I work at a dealer and I'm having service look at it after the weekend. I'll keep you guys posted.

I don't know much about the recall other than the email I got notifying the dealers. It doesn't have specifics, just an alert that the recall exists. It was mostly on Atlas but also affected 1200 jettas. That's not very many when you think about it so, it's not likely that we're all victims of this recall.

EDIT: just checked the recall again and they added info. It was a material defect affecting the long term durability of the coil springs. Safe to say this has nothing to do with the knocking/clunky sound some of us are hearing.

I have heard a clunk a couple times on aggressively bad concrete or when barreling over a speed bump far too fast to be appropriate, but that's it.

Sure you don't have something banging around in the trunk? Haha.

I’m nearing 10K miles and have never heard a clunk going over any bumps. Seems out of the norm to me to be hearing that.

This frame is modular- this car has no rear differential. It was a cost cutter on VW’s part. That’s the clunk you’re feeling.

And ice cream has no bones.

The differential is in the transaxle, because it's front wheel drive. There is no "cost cutter" missing differential in the rear suspension. And it's never in the frame.

ya I think my car with 5500 miles also feels... clunky going over regular office garage speed humps. The front is fine. This is at reasonably slow speed. Makes me wonder if the rear suspension cost cutting is to blame...

There is a rear coil spring recall out there now. Go to VW website and put in VIN to verify if it pertains to your Jetta.
