If Hyundai is smart, they should give this Sonata a "fastback hatch" to one up Camry/Accord.

Yes really. They only managed 142,000 Tucson sales last year, while the Mazda CX-5 outsold them along with every single other mainstream brand. The problem has been getting enough cars from Korea, which was a direct result of them not planning on very high volume production like everyone else. The car has been out for three years, so they really have no excuse for not ramping things up at this point except corporate incompetence.

overall, I like it. Though, why didn't they make the taillight design mimic the headlights. missed opportunity!! i despise the bumped-out civic-esque tail lights and light bar across the trunk.

Meh. I'll need to see it in real life before I really make a judgment.

Does anyone else think it looks like an Infiniti Q70 from some angles?

Are you going to at least post the pics where the two cars look similar?

It looks fresh and current. I much prefer it to the 2011-2014 all too rounded and the 2015 was way too conservative (although it had a better interior).

you mean in that they both look like cars? sure, they both have headlights, windscreens, 4 doors, 4 wheels, door handles, etc. other than that, literally not one single body crease, angle, or feature is the same or similar between the two.

Only really in the overall torpedo shape and the lines of the chrome around the windows. but cars from every era tend to look the same to the point of being virtually indiscernible in the future. Look at two early 30s cars next to each other for example.

Which is to say, yes they definitely have very similar silhouettes, but we car guys (some of us idiot savants even) zero in on the very specific details that make them totally different.

Wrong. Audi and VW both had the waterfall grill years before Hyundai started copying all there designs. Audi always had a flared out grill with less of a hex shape but it was there.

they're not mirror images and there are some detail differences, but nothing alike is pretty silly.

Usually the lower trim FCA cars don't have a middle piece that lights up -- it's just a filler piece. Only the higher trims, which are likely a small percentage, actually feature the full-width light bar.

Sonata itself has been is a nice car for a while. Result: Confusingly nice.

The grille shape is different, the hood cut lines are different, the headlights are different, the detailing and surfacing are different.

About the only thing similar is the way the hood dips into the grille... but that’s pushing it.

Can we ever have a thread about a new Korean car without people tripping over themselves to call out what it's "copying"?

There are only so many ways you can design a mainstream vehicle.

I agree Hyundai/Kia get judged particularly harshly on this, but the idea that there are no similarities between the Audi and Sonata nose is pretty preposterous. I’ll say that both cars are following the same styling trends closely. I don’t think it’s so much that one is a “copy”, but the typical TCL snark of “yep, both have four black tires ” just doesn’t hold water here. They’re similar. Is it a dirty rip-off? No! But the comparison is valid, regardless of the hood badge.

When the current generation Audi came out with more pronounced creases, I compared it to the Fusion, and someone agreed with me, or at least said they “couldn’t unsee” it. I don’t feel like this is German car bias or even particularly mean spirited. Of course cars coming out within a year of each other will share trends. Why be upset about it?

Of course it's going to be different, if it was the same they would be sued. That's not the point.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I think that the Q70 comparison further up the page is a more valid comparison, but that's just my opinion.

We're never gonna agree on something like this anyway (design), so it's a futile effort

A lot of a car's styling today is dictated by legislation. So there's so much a designer could do.
