Thread: Went to the mechanic, had a few questions for y'all

After talking to the mechanic about my car, I wanted to ask y'all about a few of the things he told me to make sure they're on base.

The initial issue was a misfire when warm and around 65-70 mph. Took it to the mechanic and he thought these might be the issues. I don't want the thing to be shot, but if it's the turbo, I'm looking at a $1K minimum bill from him to replace it.

      • He told me that there was oil past the turbo and on the cold side of the intercooler in significant quantities, meaning that the turbo was very likely shot. Is that within the realm of possibility or just a base symptom?
      • Also, he mentioned that the car was burning a substantial amount of oil, possibly greater than spec.
      • When he pulled the plugs/coils to try to figure out the misfire, he said the spark plugs were already coked even though they are at max 1000 miles old. I believe this because I've seen it myself. He thinks this is related to oil that's getting into the intake and into the engine. Does that sound right?

Would a failed turbo and oil getting into the intake lead to misfires at load? That doesn't sound right.

Misfires are from the coked-up plugs, it's a secondary symptom.

There is a chance that the source of the oil is a clogged or faulty PCV system, so make sure that's been checked. But it does sound like blown turbo seals.

Because it's the cheapest option, I'd like to check the PCV option first. What exactly am I looking for?

Then check the valve cover baffles for cracks and leaks.

I'm not familiar with the details of how the PCV system is plumbed in the 2.0T, but a basic test you can do is to take out the dipstick while the engine is running. Does the idle change? Do you feel air being forced out of the dipstick tube, or is there excessive suction (like a vacuum cleaner—a little bit is normal)? These can all indicate that the Positive Crankcase Ventilation system isn't doing its job, either due to a failed valve or clogged hose somewhere.
