The 4Motion version is getting slightly worse fuel economy compared to other "sportback" models from mainstream brands. The Buick Regal 2.0T AWD returns 21/29/24 and the Kia Stinger 2.0T AWD comes in at 21/29/24. The Regal GS is really close at 19/27/22 with a 42 HP advantage and likely fuel cost savings as it only requires regular vs. the Arteon's premium requirement. The Stinger GT AWD produces worse fuel economy at 17/25/20 but it is likely a good bit faster.
I'm curious how/why the Audi A4 with similar drivetrain can beat the Arteon so soundly in fuel economy with 27/34/23. The A4 makes 20 fewer hp but also has 1 less gear in the transmission (7 speed dsg in the Audi vs 8 speed traditional in the Arteon). Is it the difference in the quattro/4 motion systems?

I hope they offer the SEL or Rline with just FWD at some point. I'm in FL and don't want or need to pay for AWD. I'd rather the car be lighter, cheaper, and get better mpg.
Kind of surprised that the new Tiguan gets better mpg than the Arteon (both 4Mo/8sp). Big difference in power, but that should not affect hwy mpg. Maybe gearing is changed for better response?
the MQB Tiguan B-cycle motor is practically starved of fuel. not to mention that this B-cycle motor is designed specifically with fuel savings in mind.
its a turd of a motor that cant get out of its own way if it needed to...
I expect the real highway MPG will be much like the Tiguan. It easily beats the estimate, even with 4Mo. On the highway, well above most states speed limit (80mph), I pulled off 33mpg on multiple tanks driving without a/c on my trip in May. With a/c, I expect I would get 30mpg at the same speeds. Even at 80mph, I was often one of the slower driver's in the interstate (speed limit was often 75 with a few places higher). Since aerodynamics affect highway mpg most of all, the significantly lower CD of the Arteon (vs the Tiguan) should help it easily exceed the ratings.
I have a arteon sel p and i always get above the 27 mpg rating on the highway. I would say i average about 29 mpg on long trips. Pretty good for a big car like arteon. My sister in law has a 2019 tiguan, and that are cannot get of of its own way on the highway.
Driving around the other day around town with the A/C off it was saying I was hitting 36mpg.. I usually get 30-31 on highway with A/C on. I have 4 motion.. Not sure how accurate the MFI is.
Has anyone compare the MPG between normal and sport driving mode? I recently started using the sport mode and have not notice much of a drop driving around the city, what are some of you guys or gals getting for MPG with different drive mode?
My mileage quoted in the real MPG thread has pretty much been all Sport mode. I go back and forth between sport mode and manually shifting via paddles - if I'm not manually shifting, then I'm in Sport. Same went with my Audi...I just can't get along with the slower responses and earlier shift points in D. The only time I sometimes use D is on a long highway cruise, where the quick responses and higher shift points aren't needed. My mileage so far has been tracking almost exactly where it was on my first tank. I haven't yet gone on any trips or long highway drives - just the daily commute and weekend play.
Right between 25-26MPG in business hour commuting.
honestly, sport mode usually sees the best performance when it comes to economy.
i have driven my Arteon in 'Eco' and it keeps the car in such a high gear and the revs so low, that you find yourself damn near flooring it everywhere anyway.
'Eco' is great when you are on the highway and know you will be there for an extended period of time. 'Sport' mode is great for cruising around as it seems to always be in the perfect gear to accelerate when needed, but not dropping a gear either.
Do you guys trust the drive stats display for mpg?
I feel like I've bought a Jetta by mistake!
(Or is it just that I still drive like I have a Subaru Legacy?)
Glad I'm not the only one seeing stats like that -- I was almost worrying that I was doing something wrong with mpg so far above the EPA specs (especially still w/in the break-in period).
I don't really go by the stats in the onboard computer - I'll use them for trip references and general averages, but I usually prefer to reset my trip after each tank fill, calculate how much fuel I added during that fill, and calculate my mileage based on that.
My first tank was a little more conservative than the later ones, because I generally take it a little easy for the first 500 miles or so with a new car. But once I pass that threshold, I have a generally aggressive and heavy-footed driving style and local roads and highways are quite high-speed...just keeping up with the flow of traffic on the highway to work requires traveling in the 80-85MPH range...it's a very fast road. My driving style hasn't change between different car models, so I can pretty well compare mileage to my last car which was also a 2.0 T VW engine, tuned to the lower 220HP output...the difference so far is just a hair over 1MPG. I'm happy to have the extra power and extra space for that 1MPG difference.
Was showing 36mpg on the first 2.5 hrs of a drive that started with about 10 min easy city traffic then interstates that were pretty crowded so far from a steady speed.
(Stopped looking at mpg once I got close to Lincoln Tunnel.)
Drivetrain still at Normal but ACC now set to Sport.
Don't have an arteon but do have a 4Mo with DSG, and can state that MDF is just soooo wildly in accurate it's almost laughable.
36 indicated over some trips and 34 for tank average usually nets only 29 when calculated miles/gallons.
Gen5 Haldex is always sending power to the rear and is very very very dependent on throttle input way more than "wheel spin". Leaving almost every stop light I can feel the rear engaging and pushing the car yet the fronts never every lose traction. It seems you have a very fine edge where the the haldex doesn't engage and zap MPG.
Once the torque converter of that Asin tranny locks up in 8th and you're at steady state it'll spank a 6spd DSG due to gearing alone 2300 at 60MPH isn't fuel efficient. It'd need the taller gearing of a 7spd DSG to really help out but alas it'd push the price way to high, prob 2K more to that sticker price.
Also i read recently the A7 3.0 quattro gets better MPG than the Arteron 4Mo (on paper) so take that for what it's worth.
I haven't done the precise calcs yet, but the range on each tank of gas is matching up with the info screen stats.
(Big relief too, since I was used to a crazy long cruising range on my Legacy. Arteon is still shorter, but way longer than the published stats.)
Might just be me though, since my driving style seems to require only very low rpm. Except for when the highways are really turny (eg Hutch in CT), I'm just using ACC in Sport mode with distance set to min. Arteon is so very smooth even when adjusting the speed for the flow of traffic.
Just back from my first longer road trip with the Arteon - 200 miles up, 50 miles around town, and 200 miles back. Managed to complete it on one tank, still had about 1/5 tank left. Mileage on the computer reported 32MPG...not sure if it's exact, but pretty close by my guess at least around 30MPG if I used about 15 gallons.
I've now kept track of three refuelings, with an average of almost exactly 30mpg calculated, and the obc at just a few fractions above that.
This coming Sun-Mon-Tue I will be driving about eight hours, almost seven of which will be empty interstate, so will be interesting to see how high above that I record.
[..]This coming Sun-Mon-Tue I will be driving about eight hours, almost seven of which will be empty interstate, so will be interesting to see how high above that I record.[...]
On the return trip, over the course of 243 miles and 4:06 duration, all but about half-an-hour of which was nearly ideal driving on interstate with the ACC set at 72mph, and a trip avg of 59mph, OBC read 34.3 mpg.
And that was with the AC on almost all the time ... and ditto for the rear seat heater!
(No wonder my daughter kept complaining about the heat back there even with her temp set at 60F.)
Sounds about right based on my trip. I had ACC set to 78mph, and occasionally manually overrode it for a pass, or stopping for turnpike gate, and I was driving in ambient temp of 98 degrees with 85% humidity...AC was on at all times, as was ventilated seat. 90% turnpike driving with roughly 30 minutes of in-town driving...to get my 32mpg. So I was traveling a bit faster, much hotter weather, much heavier AC use.
Currently, my overall average mileage since purchase (mostly from commuting and driving around on weekends, with one longer trip) is hitting right around 21mpg. That's in Sport mode and manually paddle-shifting, very heavy right foot, hard acceleration from lights, and manually downshifting to add engine braking from high speeds to slow. I've only used normal 'D' transmission mode on the long road trip miles...otherwise I'm always in Sport or manual shift. I had roughly the same average mileage from my Allroad - right around 21mpg...my CC and 07 Passat Wagon (both VR6) averaged around 18.5mpg, and my W8 wagon around 16.5mpg. So I'm pretty happy with the gains the 2.0T engines have provided while still keeping the acceleration and power delivery about the same.
Just did my first fill and driving around town I'm getting 31.2 MPG (FWD). Haven't had a road trip yet but I'm optimistic I may get 36-38 MPG based upon my city driving.
Just made a run from Baton Rouge, LA to northwest San Antonio, TX on a single tank of gas. 485 miles and it says I still have 40 miles range left. I would have done a lot better if there hadn't been a lot of slowdowns/dead stops due to construction and accidents. I'm really impressed with the legs on the Arteon. It really runs and gets phenomenal mileage cruising at 80mph. It is very aerodynamic.
I had a 2018 S5 and the real world MPG is quite different, I get anywhere between 0.5 to 1 MPG better in the city with the Arteon and about 1 MPG better on the highway with the S5. I am guessing the miller cycle engine on the S5 does help a bit and the S5 probably has a taller overdrive final gear.
