New bags aren't expensive or difficult to change, though the selectable shocks are expensive when they go out. A lot of guys just use the base model shocks which are very cheap and then just cap off the plug at each corner. Probably what I will do as I'm not keen on spending $2000 for 4 shocks when $300 will cover all 4.
you could always got a "perfect" dobinsons 1 or 2 inch lift...

also, i've never heard of an early failure on the 460 air suspension - it's a pretty straightforward and proven system. the 470 ones are known to be much more problematic/have issues.

good to hear about the air suspension!

However, there is another level of suspension right? Like on this one, where the shocks have a sport shock setting and some kind of self leveling

also compy, that lifted black one you posted was actually the first GX460 that made me fall in love with them... i wouldn't mind getting rid of my 4Runner for an early one and lift it up like that.

there was only one "adjustable" or "air suspension" offered on GX460s which is a combination of electrically adjustable front shocks and rear airbags. There is a rocker switch just to the right of the gear selector that has a hi - normal - lo setting for rear ride height and also a switch for sport - normal - comfort next to that. this option set is only available on the premium models.

there is some naming confusion to me on the 2010-13 were only offered in base trim or premium trim. then in 2014 the nomenclature switched to a three tiered base, premium, and luxury. the luxury gets all the suspension goodies, semi-anilene leather, and driver assist options. premium has the ventilated and heated rear seats, but lacks some other options.

Adding another pic from GXOR (which if you're not familiar with, is the Lexus GX Off-Road crew - they have a great website, user support, and cool swag)...

No credit for me, but this is a 1.5in lift, 275 tires (oe is 265), rock sliders instead of running boards, and a proper roof rack. 10/10 in my mind.

I thought the luxury had the adjustable shocks??

That 2014 I posted has the adjustable front shocks I guess... which I probably don't care for. I hear the ride is great on GX's anyways.

pic from this AM. had to drop it off at the body shop today as some 20 year old tailgating idiot tapped the back of the truck at low speed. worst part is he wasn't distracted, so he didn't even have an excuse for how poorly he was driving...this was a couple months ago, but still angry.

Well, then, technically a pickup truck isn't a truck either.

Pics with a motorcycle in it are demanded. Oh and some 4x8 sheets of plywood.

Not jetta lumber, but just some proof that it can be done.

Does the tailgate window go down in the GX like it does in the 4Runners?

no sir, it's a flip up window. kind of like the older GM tahoes/yukons. the trick is the main door opens sideways (like an FJ).

If my bike is being hauled it is being stolen That said, an enclosed cargo area is so much better for a homeowner, I've only had SUVs and I've loaded everything in them, from a scoop of gravel, to washing machines, and eight foot long 2x4s or bourbon barrels (I draw the line at loose soil or mulch, but my landscaping company delivers). And I can do it in the rain, or stop at a shop and not worry about theft

Oh did you notice how I said SUV? Because my bof SUV is every bit as much a truck as a pickup.......

Not sure I'd call them problematic as opposed to just old. The 470s are just older with more miles so the rubber in the air springs is wearing out and cracking. I suspect we'll see the same issue with the 460s as they get older too.

The springs aren't all that difficult to change from what I've seen and the air compressors are reliable as long as they aren't constantly running due to leaky springs. People just use bad air springs as an excuse to install a lift.

When comparing 460 to 470, is there much difference in the engine? I assume the 460 is a bit cleaner running, and perhaps a bit more efficient...? Mechanically, is the 460 the same as the 470 in needing timing belt/water pump every 100K and basically that's it?

the 460 doesn't have a t-belt, it's a chain. the 460's are a bit more efficient, but don't expect crazy MPGs in a BOF and fairly heavy vehicle. on taller and heavier A/T tires i get around 17-18mpg highway and around 16mpg overall average. Most reports I see on 470s are an MPG or two lower.

the 470 is a 2-UZ motor - 4.7L making (in VVT trim) around 270hp, the 460 is a 4.6L 1-UR motor making around 300hp by comparison. the 460 is heavier by around 500 pounds, so that 30hp didn't change it's acceleration or speed much.

i'd mention the landcruiser prado (GX/4runner platform overseas) is used by the UN as a vehicle they send to conflict zones...they are exceedingly well built and reliable.

the 470 is a 2-UZ motor - 4.7L making (in VVT trim) around 270hp, the 460 is a 4.6L 1-UR motor making around 300hp by comparison. the 460 is heavier by around 500 pounds, so that 30hp didn't change it's acceleration or speed much.

i'd mention the landcruiser prado (GX/4runner platform overseas) is used by the UN as a vehicle they send to conflict zones...they are exceedingly well built and reliable.

Thanks for the info! We're in the midst of house-hunting right now so where we wind up and what my commute looks like might dictate my next vehicle. But if the drive is reasonable, a GX is currently at the top of the list. I've loved my MCS Clubman, but lately it's been giving me fits. I would really prefer to have a car that isn't likely to start coming apart at the seams once it hits a certain age.

Whenever I drive, I need my music which is all handily located in my phone... it helps drown out the voices in my head as I travel. I know the interface for the stereo is behind the times, but is it at least livable and easy enough to use?

my 2015 will allow me to stream spotify from my phone via bluetooth to the sound system without major issues. it displays all the relevant info like song, artist, run time, etc. it works fairly well, but is a touch clunky to get running. it's pretty easy overall. i'd mention if you like music while driving, the Levinson option is worth it.

My new 4Runner was tapped by distracted driver at a light.

Also mad. This was two weeks ago.
