We spent the winter with our GS350 AWD and a Volvo V50 wagon (non-AWD) and decided we needed an actual truck. My first instinct was several things:

      - No cute utes, BOF or nothing
      - It must be reliable long term (5-7 years)
      - Third row was a major perk
      - Comfortable/well optioned with heated seats, sunroof, etc.
      - Ability to tow, haul, go off road, do stuff, swiss army knife vehicle, etc.
      - Look good, my job requires a nice looking/clean vehicle as I have clients
      - My spouse wouldn't complain about ride/tippiness like we had with our FJ

The decision making process really came down to a few things as well...I wanted to be on a budget under $30k, it had to be trustworthy/reliable which rapidly ruled out most of ze Germans and other Euro vehicles, and it needed to be a good all around truck.

      We drove/considered -

2012+ Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon - I adored this car, it was a trash pile to drive, it checked about half the boxes, but damn it was fun. It was rapidly vetoed by my spouse and in the end I realized it was a pipe dream. Plus it's letting me get a few years before we cash the GS350 in for a gladiator (shhhhhhh!)

2007 4Runner Limited V8 - The one we saw was trashed, in fact, every single one I saw was trashed. Sadly, clean 4th gens in the upper midwest were pretty outrageous pricewise and most had a zillion miles on them. I don't mind paying 20k for a 10+ year old truck, I do mind when it as 190k on it...reliable or not, time, mediocre owners, and rust ruled a lot of these out.

GX470, really liked these, but the wife found them tippy. They have a booming aftermarket and a generally great buys, but there weren't many good ones for sale. Ultimately the age and cost for a clean one made it not work out.

Tahoe/Yukon - just too big. I like these trucks, but my spouse found it really uncomfortable to drive coming out of cars (even a big GS seems tiny by comparison). Plus the most recent ones don't seem to be quite the reliability tanks the older ones were.

2010+ 4Runner - these damn things must be plated with gold somewhere i'm not aware of. i couldn't find a single limited 2013+ for sale for less than 30k anywhere. it was downright outrageous. we looked at a new one and honestly we probably would have bought a new TRD Pro (that blue color...mmm) on the spot, but! no 3rd row on pro's or off-roads. if we were going to go over budget, we'd want everything...and when we looked at a new one, the Lexus dealer was right next door...

So...if you're already looking at going over budget and you want EVERYTHING for a long time with no compromises...you walk into the Lexus dealer.

      Ta Da!

Meet our new 2015 GX460, CPO, 38k miles, brand new tires and brakes, literally spotless. Even better, it's a luxury, 17 speaker levinson stereo, air ride, darker wheels, nicer leather. Other than the Nav being a touch dated, it's like buying brand new (sticker was $64k). It also has the remainder of its factory warranty until later this year and then 2 more years of bumper to bumper on top of that.

And we love the thing. It checks very box and the only real downside is that it gets about 17mpg average. These are on the 4Runner/Taco frame, they have the correct number of truck cylinders (8!), a small third row, nearly every option, and the dealer was great to work with. We paid $38k out the door. Yes it was over budget, but when we were looking at CPO 4Runner Limiteds, they were within a few thousand.

I have a few small complaints, I think the brakes are a touch soft, it has the notorious propshaft clunk (dealer is fixing this), and i wish the Nav was a little slicker, but otherwise, it's perfect.

There aren't a lot of threads on GX460's so feel free to send any Q's my way. Cheers.

Good choice i have 17 GX460 premium sport package all it is just darker wheels and slightly different bumper, These things handle soo good for the size the KDSS sway bars help a ton, the ride is very nice we just did 7 hours each way and zero issues... Im a Lexus Master Tech these things a pretty much bullet proof, i dont use premium gas just regular 87 for over 30k already.

I have a 470 and it has been mechanically great, my only complaint is that the wheels are pitted to hell and the frame has a lot of rusts, but it is also a decade old, 120/30k miles of life in the salt lick winters of the Ohio Valley

I seriously don't do anything but feed it and change the oil, thing runs like new.

Congrats OP! I've liked the GX for a while now. In fact, looking at purchasing a 6x12 trailer in the event I sell the Tundra for one and have to make do without a pickup bed (hauling wood, ATV, 17.5' tandem kayak, etc).

Check out ih8mud.com. GX470 builds have been the norm but the 460 is catching up. I'd just do AT tires first, then probably wheels, mild lift/Dobinsons suspension, sliders, roof rack...but it's a slippery slope!

Love that the GX is still such a well kept secret. IMO, the old tech/platform is part of the charm. Pampered housewives keep leasing them & flooding the market with lightly used examples. I'll take a GX over the "Toyota taxed" 4Runner all day. It's insane how the 4Runner holds its value.

You bought an suv. Yes it's a BOF and yes it's third on my list for next vehicle (land cruiser/LX, F150, then gx), but it's not a truck.

body on frame defines what a truck is in my world. just because it doesn't have a pick-up bed does not mean that it isn't a truck. yes it has a fully enclosed body, but it's not one of the the literally dozens, of cute-utes.

^^^Fair enough, but OP's definition hold's weight too. These dinosaur BOF SUV's are a dying breed & should be celebrated/recognized...just not enough to raise awareness/resale value!

I like your choices for next vehicle. Love the LX570. Also the current gen Armada. But then I get side tracked & think JGC/Durango SRT...

But in the end I think I'll go Japanese Land Rover like a GX or LX.

OP - for first mod, just do AT tires, if you look at pics online they do a great job of removing the "soccer mom" vibe of the OEM Michelins. Be careful on sizes, small GX wheelwells cannot accommodate huge sizes/much larger than stock. I think 275/65 might be the largest without heat gun/trimming plastic/spacers/lift.

Nice! I thought about one of these but I couldn’t get over the old nav and paying that kinda $$$ for a used vehicle. I do really like them though, might try to talk my wife into one for her next ride.

This is one of my favorite platforms of all time. We rented a UN-spec one in Belize with a naturally-aspirated 3-liter/4-cyl diesel and a stick about 10 years ago and it was slow (only had 95 hp / 150 lb-ft) but about the most comfortable vehicle I've ever driven. You can do 50+ MPH on washboard roads and the suspension can be flailing around wildly under the truck with essentially no drama inside. It's a shame we can't get them with a diesel here because that one had dual tanks that held 150 liters (40 gallons) -- we drove a little over 1000 miles in a week, most of it either off-road or through the mountains and it still had a eighth of a tank left when we got back to the airport (25+ MPG).

Exactly like this (TX trim) but the previous generation

The perfect truck. If I had been smarter when I bought my 4Runner, I'd own a GX460, too. You always buy the best cars!

And even though the 4.7 is a touch torquier, that 4.6 with the 6 speed is just so smoooooth. I drove a friend's recently and was blown away by the fact that it never seems to rev or make any noise. You get the same MPG as me with a much nicer motor, so it all evens out.

P.S. Tacomas do NOT get the glorious frame of the 4Runner/GX.

The current gen prado in D4D diesel spec sounds really cool with its turbo drawl

Cant say i hate the v8 us spec gx's , only driven a first gen and loved the fit and finish of these cars. Probably why most old gx still look to be in great condition in comparison to simila year X5s

No according to the definition of truck.
What he bought is definitely a truck.

I notice no pictures of the front end.

I too actually like ugly vehicles if they serve a purpose. I mean, I did have a LEAF for a while.

      Nice.

I hope yours serves you as well as our '11 RX350 has served us. She is just about to hit 100k and hasn't had a single issue. It was also a 2 year old CPO with 30ish when we got it. Absolute beast in the snow.

Really hoping she goes from the RX to the GX for her next one.

Come on with this. I would agree that it's not a pickup, but it sure is a BOF V8 truck. SUV doesn't mean anything anyway.

This is the plan, our GS350 is closing in on 100k (we bought it at 51k) and guess what it has needed in that time...oil changes. The fit and finish on Lexus vehicles is awesome. Not saying that they don't have issues, but man things are well thought through.

I'm sure it is the same on the 460, but one thing that makes me smile every time I change the oil on the 470 is a little piece of metal welded to the frame beneath the oil filter. When you crack the filter open and it starts draining the runoff hits that piece of metal and is funnled away to where it can fall easily flow off to where collection is easy (rather than pooling on the body/trim).
