Thread: What Car Was My Grandfather Driving?

I have no information other than this was likely the late 1940s early 1950s. I think he was in Canada just outside Toronto.

      Any guesses on the car?

I take that back, the tail lights are definitely ‘54 Chevy. Not a Bel Air I can tell by the lack of trim. Maybe a 210 post sedan.

It’s a gorgeous car, my favorite GM year. People talk about the shoebox cars ‘55-7 but the ‘54s (especially Cadillac and Olds) are absolutely gorgeous machines of you ask me.

Back when the lower trim level was literally lower trim level.

      I really like them, too.

This comes up in a '53 search. They're mostly the same other than the tail lights, aren't they? I don't know if there were chrome trim options. Usually they got more chrome laden as the years went on, but I suppose it's possible that they dropped the side chrome for '54. Does anyone know?

It’s mostly tail lights and probably a grille between the two years. The Bel Air was top trim so that’d have more chrome than a 210. Here is a 210

      Here is a Bel Air

      Here is a Bel Air

If I remember correctly the 210 is the base model, there's a 510 and the Bel Air on top, correct? If so, why is there no chrome on the '54 in Hawk's pic? Was I wrong in that there is a base model underneath the 210?

Not only that, but if you wanted a sedan that's what you bought. There was one. There wasn't a small, medium and large version.

Ha! That's one of my aunts I guess.

So my grandfather is from England. Worked on Lancasters during the war, then moved to Canada and got a job as an engineer on the Avro Arrow. He designed the landing gear for that plane. Was devastated when it was cancelled. Moved to DeHavilland and worked on the landing gear on the Dash 7 and Dash 8 (now Bombardier Q400.) Many of his friends moved to NASA and worked on the Apollo program. If you fly a Q400 look out the window as the landing gear comes down. That's my gramp's. He's still alive today in his mid 90s.

Thanks for all the responses, guys this place is awesome.

Would be funny if he got the base model. Then I'd know it runs in the family.

      So a '53 or '54 Chevy 210 or Chevy 510?

^^^ Shoddy maintenance. There were planes that weren't looked after properly that had issues.

His patents are cool. Even on the Boeing 777 there is evidence of his work. I don't know if there are plane spotters here, but if you watch a 777 come in for a landing you'll notice the landing gear 'tilts' up at the front and down at the back, so that the back wheels touch first. That was his design from 1974 that Boeing used later, you can trace his name in the patents for the Boeing system. Pretty cool.

Trick question. He's clearly not driving the car.

Could be, I figured those didn’t even have the gravel guards.

      Looks like a 1954 Chevrolet 150 2 door sedan.

Geez, I hope he whored out pics of his cars and landing gear in the Toronto Star or whatever was the equivalent of TCL back in the day.
