Thread: 02 337 not building boost past 4psi

    1. 05-15-2019 09:49 AM #1
Hey guys, i have an 02 337 where today driving down the highway when it felt like my car died and came back to life, twice. When it came back the car wouldnt produce boost over 4 psi. (Normally pushes 20 psi peak and tapers to 17psi)

Car runs fine at an idle, did a brief check of boost and vaccum lines cant see anything damaged but it was still hot so i couldnt tell for sure.

I did notice that my diverter valve had black residue on the trumpet.

      Any help would be greatful!

Sounds like you're in limp mode. Get the car scanned for codes, preferably with a VW specific scanner like VCDS. OBDeleven seems to be another good option.

Not sure what you mean. You need an OBDII scanner.

Limp mode is just what happens when there is an issue with the car to the point that boost is restricted to prevent damage. Happens with stock vehicles, tune doens't matter.

You need to scan with a VW specific tool because often times, if a CEL isn't on but there are codes, generic readers don't pick up the codes. I hit limp mode on occasion in my 20th and my Torque app doens't pick up a code, but VCDS does. Also the code won't specify limp mode. Often its related to boost though.

This is excellent information! Thank you very much! When you have been in limp mode did you ever find the cause?
