      Pretty much my response. But in addition, typically the feel of the controls used to operate the car are sharper in the Porsche than most if not all BMWs. Though the new Z4 will be available with a manual down the road---at least that's my recollection. The boxster just seems like a sharper option.

      If shopping for a pure sports car, one without back seats and such, the Boxter and Cayman twins are just too damn good and enormously fun to drive, which makes it very hard to pick anything over it. An easy choice for me.

      The take rate on manual transmission in luxury cars is so little these days that it makes sense that BMW no longer offers a 3-series with a manual transmission. Having said that, it seems weird to me that the Z4 isn't available with a manual.


      Then again I just did a search on Autotrader and there's only 143 Z4s with a manual in the entire year range the Z4 was made. Whereas there are thousands of Z4s with automatics.

      I'd take the Z4- While the 718 design is evolutionary, it just looks dated to me. The Z4 looks entirely new on the other hand- even if the front is bulbous. I like the DRLs on the Z4 as well- taking a departure from the cliche angel eyes.

      Can't disagree with this but the new Supra would make me think long and hard.

      Not base: I'd take a hard look at the I6 Z4.

      I already have a fantastic 4cyl sports car, not sure I'd spend tons of money to get a different one.

      I voted Z4. But the pricing here in Mexico is much more attractive.

      Here, the Z4M40i is priced at the level of the base Boxster. And the base Z4 we get is a 20i (we don't get the 30i) and it's proced comfortably 15-20K below a comparably equipped base Boxster.

      At equal prices, the Boxster is the superior sports car because of the chassis and availability of a manual. But with our pricing, not so much.

      I know you don't get to pick your press cars, but a 70k base boxster? (not that the z4 is much better, they're both insane and I agree that a C7 is a much more desirable decision, hell you could probably get a GS convertible for that money!)

      Between the two, I'd also pick the boxster, no surprise it's a runaway here. For that kind of coin and limited to those two cars I'd go with the Z4SdriveM40i or whatever the hell they're calling it, since the base price is $65k and it's probably better base equipped.

      C) neither. M240i convertible is $20k cheaper than the porshe, has 2 more cylinders (and gets the same fuel economy), 100hp more than the Z4, has usable rear seats, a useabe trunk, manual,





      The Z4 and Boxster both have re-e-e-e-e-diculous price tags for what they offer IMO. But if I had to choose between those two: no manual, no care. easy win for the porsche. also, the z4 is uuuugly, and the info screen is horribly integrated. that's worse than the propped-up tablet-style screens.

      I'm biased and glad the 718 is winning, but to be fair to the Z4, for the price of the Boxster they tested they could've (and IMO should've) had an M40i to compare to.

      30i Z4 vs base Boxster, the BMW is just outgunned. More lbs and less hp.

      $20k is also overstated; RWD M240i cab starts at $50k, and I built it with Leather, premium back, good stereo, LEDs and landed at $57.5k. Z4 starts at $63.7k.

      I built up an M40i Z4 online, and it's shockingly simple (read: well equipped from base), not a lot of packages to add on. Only three packs, driver assistance, premium and exec, and then three options, park distance, parking assist, and active cruise. And then upholstery, wheel, and trim options. I just added premium and exec (mostly to get the good stereo) and it adds $5k to get to $68k, so the real price difference is $10k, not $20k. And base vs base is $14k.


      If you want an all-out sports car, yeah, Boxster is probably better (though you can argue I6 vs flat 4), but I sorta like the half sports car/half GT cruiser spot the Z4 occupies, especially in my part of the world. And I don't think $65k is bad, especially when real-world pricing will be around $60k most likely. And when you build up a Boxster S (more competitive with the M40i) you're looking at $80-90k, $65k for a Z4 is a substantial discount, and you're still I6 > flat 4.
