    Thread: Ben Modified Build Thread - Subaru 360 Kei Van Resto Mod

      I purchased this Van along with the Autobianchi. The goal is to build it in such a way that it will be powerful, handle and brake well and capable of being a daily driver



      Here is a poorly manipulated photo of the general look that I am going for. I am considering a canvas top attached to the full cage along with moving the wheels out to the corners.




      The current plan is Hayabusa power. Here is a chain drive diff which will be coupled with a much narrowed VW bug suspension with 4 wheel disc brakes. The diff is finished with the exception of a flexplate to utilize an electric reverse.



      The body is off the frame now



      The frame is actually a lot better than the body



      No shortage of body filler but at least the floor is good (except for the spare tire well)





      I will be removing all of the stock suspension, brakes and drivetrain. All of which will be used as donor parts for other peoples restorations. The suspension from the bug will be narrowed 11 inches. I am using 944 Turbo PhoneDial wheels and aftermarket 4 wheel disc brakes. I should be able to tuck the tires within the fender wells or at least under a small flare.



      Here is the VW beam going in. The frame rails will be beefed at each contact point with the interior cage.



      The springs packs will be cut down



      The beam will have height adjusters added. The front frame rails have been plated with heavier steel with the beam fitting on the top and bottom of the frame rails



      All of the stock front suspension is out and will go on to its new owner

      Front suspension is nearly done. Just waiting on a 14mm Tap to thread the shortened steering arm



      Sandblasted the rear VW trailing arms. Replacing the bearing and seals also



      Installing studs in the rear rotors



      Starting on the rear suspension

      Why not run a long tie-rod between the wheels and remove the short tie-rod? This should give you better handling, and help prevent some single wheel bump steer.

      The headroom appears nonexistent.

      How is the driver's seat going to be situated, and are you three feet tall?

      There’s no Ackerman effect with that setup. The inner and outer wheels travel different distances, so when you push it in a corner you’ll have a lot of slip, making it more likely to plow since you’re already slipping. You can convert to center steer with a U-joint shaft, which helps a lot on the short side, though technically makes the long side worse.

      At 6 feet I can still get in it and have a couple of inches of headroom. I checked before I handed over the cash! They were using the back seat cushions from an 80's grand am (very form fitting) directly on the floor. Comfortable enough, but the wheel wells were very much in the way. It was also very difficult to get in the van between the steering wheel and the wheel well. By moving the front wheels (and wheel wells) forward I should be able to get in easier and have sufficient hip room. The van came with an additional roof, so if needed, I could raise the roof back up a bit. I don't think it will come to that.

      Temporarily removed some sheet metal. It will be modified and re-installed later.



      Why does every project car I drag home have frame rails filled with pecans!
      This is just what fell out when I cut the rail



      This is post air nozzle!



      Decided to save the VW torsion housing for a future project. Went with aftermarket irs mounts and heim joints. More details to follow as parts arrive.

      Fabbed some plates to attach to the rear trailing arms and a heim joint to the new crossmember

      Thanks! Re: the chain, simplicity. With everything in place, the chain can be replaced without disassembly where a belt would require disconnecting a half shaft or removing the diff.

      These coilovers are from the front of a miata. Pick a Part bargain. Perfect fit.

      Started an initial fitting of the body on the chassis to determine upper spring mounts and cage mounts



      Cut out the front wheel wells and rear arches to determine new placement of each
