I just got a 1989 vw Cabriolet about a month ago. Had an '84 back in '84 for a few years and loved it but I sold it to go into 911 cabs. This new to me '89 ran very well for about a month. Then today I replaced the v belts so the a/c belt wouldn't scream anymore. After I did that The car ran fine except the oil light started to come on especially at idle at stop lights. I add a quart of oil to the car and filled up the gas tank. It was very low on gas since one of my sons has been driving it. With in 4 minutes of filling the tank and adding oil the car stopped and wouldn't start for a few minutes.
My first thought was that the belts could be too tight and putting load on engine. After letting the car sit for 3-5 minutes it started up just fine but within 3-4 minutes it died again. I got it home and thought it might be bad gas or the gas mixed up some gunk in the fuel tank. I replaced the fuel filter. Same thing happened started fine but after driving it it started to lose idle when I stopped hard then it would stop all together in about 3-5 minutes time.
When got it home I sprayed starting fluid into the intake hose when the idle would start to die the engine made a klunking sound and then would rev up so I thought it was a fuel issue.
I started spraying carb cleaner around the engine to see if I had a vacuum leak but nothing changed at idle. I figure it is a k jet issue but am wondering if I did something to the engine when I changed out the v belts or when I added the oil. The main thing I am thinking is car was running fine except the a/c belt would scream when I turned on the a/c. I start to work on the car, changed out belts and the a/c belt sounds perfect. I am feeling good about my mechanical skills then whamo car dies after driving a few minutes. Crap!
Any sage advice?
Thanks,
Buck
