Thread: Need Car recommendations... $20k max... some interesting qualifiers

    1. 07-12-2019 01:09 PM #1
      Hi All,

Moving soon and am in need of a car as I will no longer be able to walk to work.

The lower the price, the better.

      What i'm looking for.

Fun, capable, able to be driven up to Tahoe in the winter, so AWD is preferable.

      Seats at least 4 ppl.

Automatic is fine, manual is preferred but rush hour traffic may suck.

quirky qualifier: There will be no garage. It will be sitting outside all the time underneath some trees and stuff in a wet, hot, cold, climate of the Bay area (Marin).

what is moderately reliable enough to be a daily, good road trip car that fits these criteria?

      Older A8/S8? A7/S7? WRX?

New or open to used? Is MPG a concern at all?

As a Marin native, I'd like to be the first to congratulate you on the move! Given your criteria and location, I'd probably just go out and buy what we already have, an F25 BMW X3 but for something newer, I'd get a Golf Alltrack in green.

Looks like someone is on the hunt for an AWD wagon of some sort. I know of one nearby but it's a tad over your budget...

My reco is 2016 Subaru Forester XT. Reliable, sporty, and jack-of-all trades.

thought he was mentioning the 2.5 XT turbo... which is definitely more limited in selection.

Yea, I could do it, but i don't want to park a brand new/newer car on the side of the road in the weather all day... and i'm saving up for a house, and a wedding and all sorts of things that come with growing up.

x2 on the newest subaru wrx/outback/forester you can purchase... they are everywhere in Tahoe.

since you're on a vw site... MK6 Manual 4DR Golf R? plenty of clean-looking examples on autotrader under $15k-$20k

      Has to be new?

With a limited budget all the more reason to dip into the tremendous value of pre-owned, IMO.

I'd look at an Infiniti Q50 3.0T. Outstanding values to be had. Easy tuning power available from amsperformance.com (even rear LSD).

Japanese reliability since you're parking in the elements year-round.

Folks suggesting a Subaru must hate you?

At first glance, sure. But if you think about it, a semi-appliance AWD automatic may not be a terrible suggestion if it's going to sit on the road and have to be a reliable daily driver. As much as I don't care for Subi's, those suggestions may be the most appropriate.

I'd feel terrible about using a sexy Q50 3.0T for this task. Yes, they are a great value and great power, but may not be the right call for this task.

will depend on the day if I take the ferry or the car to the city.

Drive back from sf will require about 3-4 stop lights on hills.

I can think of, off the top of my head, 4-5 members on TCL alone that live in the Bay Area and daily drive stick shifts.

Don't go overkill with AWD, for under 20K there's always my first choice aka Honda Fit or Mazda 3 or maybe you can find the 201 HP Kia Soul GT for under $20K. Just slap some snow tires on them and you'll be fine.

If your only need for AWD is for Tahoe purposes, why not just get a rental that you can comfortably use strictly for that purpose on an as-needed basis? I'd rent a larger SUV for extra storage and/or ski/snowboard/etc space and just use something fun/reliable for daily purposes.

Are you crazy?! This is America! If you want a large AWD vehicle then damnit, it's your right as a citizen to own one!
