So i recently picked up a vw cabrio and i am wondering what this knock is. The cabrio has some issues but i don't wanna stick money into it until i can be sure it is still ok.
The guy mentioned the low oil pressure light coming on after the car warmed up, which is what really concerns me. I have a video of the noise here: https://youtu.be/kCvgqIU-Mo0
I plan on trying heavier oil and new spark plugs at some point. Thabk for you time and ill try and keep everyone posted.
Update on the situation. I changed oil and filter. I used 10w-40 for oil with some lucas oil. The knock has decided to stay the same loudness.
However, i have noticed that after the treatment, when it gets hot enough sometimes it gets better and once it even stopped knocking. But every time it let it cool of it starts up again. The oil pressure buzzer has come on at me but it only buzzes for a moment then shuts off for pretty much the rest of the trip. My thoughts are oil pump, can anyone comfirm or deny my theory?
That noise sounds like it's lifters. The low oil pressure light should not come on while the engine is running.
I'm not a fan of throwing on parts until the problem goes away. I would start with testing the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge. See what you really got. I would make the test after the engine is really warmed up [30-45min road test on the freeway]. If it is low, then the cause could be that the bearings are all worn out or the pump is worn out. There also could be a large internal leak inside the engine.
If the oil pressure is low, the lifters may not work properly which could cause your noise. The lifters could also be just worn out too.
So confirm your oil pressure, if it is low, remove the oil pan and check the main/rod bearings. If they are worn and the crank is not damaged, you may get away with replacing them. Oil pumps can be checked but they pretty cheap so it would not be a bad idea to replace it while you are in there.
If your oil pressure if fine, then you should locate the cause of the buzzer from coming on. Usually it is the switch. There are usually two, one for low RPM pressure and the other for high RPM pressure.
If the oil pressure is fine, then the lifters are probably faulty.
You never mentioned the miles or the service history of the engine.
Agree it sounds like hydraulic lifter(s) ticking which isn't for sure a disaster, but in conjunction with an oil light warning it is certainly much more concerning. In this case I would for sure check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge throughout the rpm range, first cold to be sure it's even safe to let the engine run long enough to warm up, and then fully warm.
How many miles does the engine have? Do you know anything about the previous driver(s)? Little old lady with good maintenance records vs teenage boy racer with no apparent maintenance at all?
