Thread: Gas Tank Leak / Ventilation Valve / Heat Shield Recall 2008 4Motion

    1. 08-29-2019 11:25 PM #1
Long time VW/Audi family. But my kid just worked all summer and then used her minimum wage + tip money to buy (against parent’s advice :-) ) a 2003 Volkswagen Passat GLX 4Motion Sedan 4D with 120,000 to take off to college. Day 2 had CEL, Day 3 gas was leaking from driver’s side in front of rear wheel. As I have come to find out (in the last 24 hours) classic 4-motion fuel tank ventilation value issue. I haven’t been successful with the search function here on VWVortex... but I’ve seen from various threads about the 2008 recall, and ten-plus-years-on how people continue to fight with VW to cover the replacement of the tank and valve. Best I can tell, people were still successful in 2017 to get VWoA to cover the repair. But, now we are over the 10 year mark. I’ve heard $2k to $2.7k to replace the tank and valve. Boggles the mind how a recall can become no longer the manufacturer’s issue with the passage of time.

Anyone had success recently with VW covering the gas tank and vent valve repair?

Good luck with this. Too bad the previous owner did not deal with this. Keep us posted.

This never applied to me so I might be off a bit on the details but my understanding is that the recall was to 'inspect' the tank and replacement was only done if it was deemed necessary. So the inspection may have been done without a replacement and some dealers will tell you that 'it's been done, nothing more to do'. However, I also believe that since this is a critical safety issue recall there is no time limit. If you can prove the tank is leaking in the way the recall was intended to fix, VW is on the hook to fix it. At least that is my understanding from what I've read here and at PassatWorld.com. Best of luck.

I'm not sure if this was a typo but a 2008 is not a B5. I imagine it is a B6 although you should check that. I'm not sure if this affects the recall or not so just FYI.

I was trying to make the post not about our particular (b5.5) car, but rather the date of the 2008 recall. I imagine the unless the issue has already raised its head (and be fixed), some folks will be uncovering the story now.

Did you at least look at the hoses on the fuel filter? It's right in front of the RR tire. I think the vent valve is on the other side of the car.

The OP has a 2003 Passat and the post is about that vehicle. He is in the right forum. 2008 refers to the date of the recall.

VWoA returned a call... and is setting up an ‘inspection’ a week from today. Then, we’ll see what comes next...

Just a follow up. VW has agreed to replace the fuel tank and vent valve for free! Here we are September 2019... 11 years after the recall. My kid is very happy!
