What’s up,
So I bought a 01 mk4 Jetta 1.8t the had 111k miles and no significant body damage or engine problems. But the previous owner said the car wouldn’t shift in 2nd, that in driving it he would shift from 1st to 3rd. I have driven the vehicle and it will cycle through all the gears including reverse but not 2nd. I popped the hood and disconnected the shift cables and even manually moving the links I couldn’t get the vehicle into 2nd. After running the vehicle lifted in neutral I can hear a subtle rattling in the manual transaxle case it almost sounds dry even. My next job is flushing the transmission oil and seeing if fluid stops the rattling and hopefully the 2nd gear shift problem. Anyone dealt with a problem like this before? Any advice?
