gave up and bought a 4Runner

If I could get a D90 with the six cylinder hybrid and no options but the locker and tow hitch somewhere in the $50s, it'd be a genuinely tempting replacement for the 4Runner. The problem is, I won't be able to get that configuration (likely ever) but at least for a couple years, at which point this really won't look special. They'll sell great for what they are. I'm a decently hardcore offroader by 2019 standards/for someone who's still making payments and daily driving their off-road rig, and I think this actually looks like an excellent package. I daily drove an FJ62 for a couple of years, so you won't find me internet pining after the "old trucks" the way a bunch of people who have never driven one are.

I'd gladly pay a little more for one vehicle that would sit comfortably with the cruise at 85 mph and also get me to all the fishing and camping spots I like to go. However, at the rate Toyota is developing TNGA and the other options continue to overprice/underwhelm, it seems my mid-term strategy of hot hatch daily and cheap older Toyota for truck stuff is going to be more cost effective and realistic.

The "Off-road Pack" ($1350) is really the only one that's needed to increase capability since it includes the rear diff lock. The snorkel and some of the other add-ons can always be installed at a later date.
Exactly the diffs alone were 1100, so 245 bucks for off road tire upgrade and a 110v outlet somewhere seemed worth it. Towing pack adding some neat stuff but nothing I cared about so just the hitch was 600 with a nice factory harness? Beats uhaul hitch and rigged wires for only half the price or more than double for the actual towing package. I built the first one with the country pack, but didn't care about half of it so that is flares and mud flaps ala carte.. which along with the black roof and white dash I put in are really just 1600ish worth of aesthetics I could certain go without.

All of this outrage overpricing. It’s a Land Rover. There are $70k Wranglers all over the place, use your brains folks.
      Exactly.

I think it will sell like hot cakes in the target demographics. A half-priced G-Wagon?
Agreed. This is placed right where a Defender has always been, ABOVE the Wrangler, but well below a G-Wagen. This will be a huge hit with the demo that will actually buy it.

I think a lot of the complaints so far are just about it being something it's not trying to be.

Rear seats fold nice and flat, and everything looks plastic for easy cleaning.

The C-pillar looks seriously beefy in that interior shot.

I’m also noticing a body color panel on the two door models in the middle of the glass. I really hope that is optional, why would you otherwise block the rear passengers view.

I do like this type de-contenting from a luxury brand though.

      Steel wheels...

That's where the owners can put their "Salt Life", "REI", and "Patagonia" stickers.

My 110 Build came to $57.5

I just designed my perfect NEW LAND ROVER DEFENDER take a look!!! https://buildyour.landrover.com/lr2/...Q95uS8.twitter

I built a Wrangler Rubicon, 4 door, color-matched hardtop and some options to bring the spect up and it's $55.3

There's nothing wrong with the New Defender pricing.

My ideal build comes to $54K. Not bad - Green w/white contrast roof - Urban appearance package, heated seats, upgraded stereo, and mini fridge hell yes.

Air suspension is standard on the 110, optional on the 90, according to the videos so far.

The Carfection video is detailing the offroad measurements vs the old Defender and the new one beats in every number, sometimes by a LOT. Starts at around 6:00

This will be a big sales hit. I wonder what happens to the Discovery as I don't see may people picking a Disco over a Defender if the pricing is similar.

Henry Catchpole had the best intro video.

When you look at the accessories you can tell who they're targeting with these vehicles--the polo and yellow lab crowd.

Note also that with many of the accessories the price doesn't include the installation--that could easily double the cost of many of them.

I think the 90 is butt ugly and poorly proportioned somehow, but the 110 looks reasonable. It needs a 3.0L diesel though...

I was just informed the snorkel shown does nothing to increase wading depth. It's not designed to avoid water but get fresh, non-dusty/dirty air.

      Looks cool, but I'll pass.

A base coil sprung 90 may actually get me interested.

      This x 11/tents.

The people seeing a little Kia Soul, Ford Flex kinda vibe have a solid point. I don’t know what they could have done differently to avoid that. Bottom line is, this is by far the most interesting SUV out there to me, it hits the sweet spot in many ways.

So it does exactly what intake snorkels were originally designed for

Same. The fact it's the only no cost paint color option helps also. Any other color costs $710. White is super easy to maintain and repair and is coolest in the summer heat.

The first one I built was more spartan. But for resale value and future utility (should I become a regular beach goer) on my second virtual build I added all the off-road tech and the expensive but convenient built-in air compressor.

Hmm, maybe I need to buy some Tata Motors stock.

      Edit:

Dumb question: Will there be a manual option? I could see it having a decent take rate on the 90...

Less dumb question: Are these motors beefed up at all for off-road duty? Or are they the exact same as found in, say, a Jaguar XF?

The snorkel is very helpful if you drive someplace that is very dusty often like dry dirt roads in summertime. If you're not driving down >10 miles of dry, dusty dirt roads every day then it's probably not needed.
