I’m sure the euphoria he gets from seeing his fortune grow is all the excitement he needs in life.

His address is readily available. Zillow has his 5 bed, 2.5 bath, 5,830 sqft home on a 3/4 acre lot at an estimated value of $1,004,341. It's a 1921 build so I'm sure there's been renovations but it really is a relatively ordinary home by modern day standards. He's just not a hedonist, that's all.

WOW, this post. Reading this story, I am not one bit surprised that a guy with the Tesla is way upside down on his loan.

Working in retail industry for many years, I've encountered a lot of "interesting" things/situations that will make you go

One thing is for sure, that quote that someone once said "never judge a book by it's cover", is totally, absolutely, 100% spot on.

I can't see how making more money at his age is even satisfying. But he free to do whatever he wants. Doesn't seem to be helping the middle class with his lack of spending.

Tesla guy paying more for car than my 2 mortgages. And thanks to people like him, EV cars will have a future!

If I was ever this upside down, I would just put the car into a wall.

Desperate times, call for desperate measures.

Then again I for me to buy a car this expensive I would have already bought so many other assets, that it wouldn't have been an issue.

If you read about Buffet his passion has always been making money not spending it. He's spending his time exactly how he wants too.

And I don't think it's about "making money" for Buffet, it's more about the thrill of the chase, about finding deals others can't, etc etc. Money is a scoreboard, not a goal, if that makes sense.

Uhh, that doesn't help unless you have gap insurance. Even then your rates will go up also.

Ending the story with a failed attempt at insurance fraud would make the story so much more entertaining, though.

Even a repo won't solve the problem.

They take your car and auction it off. You still owe the difference between its auction value and the amount on your loan.

When we were way upside down on our first house back in like '10-11, we had a friend who was in a similar position on a townhouse she owned. She kept telling us we were stupid, "just stop paying and give it back to the bank, what are they going to do to you?"

Well, she found out later when she was served with a six-figure lawsuit for penalty interest, crazy broker fees, the difference between the auction price and what she owed on her mortgage, etc etc etc. Last year she wanted a new car, she had to have her parents buy it for her and make the payments to them because she can't finance a ham sandwich.

      She didn't declare bankruptcy?

Add to the list of those amazed as to how much an entity is willing to loan for both houses and cars.

Chances are he selected gap insurance with a car this expensive. Who cares if your rates go up if it saves you $80,000?

She didn't lose her job or anything, she could make the payments, she just wanted to move and couldn't sell. So she walked away. Idiocy. In fact, my BIL, who she knows really well, part of his frigging JOB as legal counsel for a bank is to litigate these kinds of things. Even he was like, uhhh, no, that's not how this works..
