Yesterday while attempting to merge into traffic from a median, my clutch pedal stuck about 1/2 way up and the engine revs spiked like it was free wheeling. I shifted to second, not really understanding what was happening because I was focused on the oncoming traffic, and the car did the same thing. It was like the clutch completely slipped. I drove a short way, pulled over and pumped the clutch pedal. It seemed normal. There was the distinct smell of clutch when I got to my destination and then a slight clutch burning smell when I drove the car a couple of times after that the same day.

Car has 22000 miles. I drive spiritedly but I don't do burnouts, power-shift or anything else that would be obviously damaging to the clutch. Car is bone-stock, factory tunes, exhaust, etc. Thoughts on possible causes?

Sounds like the clutch release bearing has failed. I've read on the forum, others have had the same issue. Mine hasn't yet??

Sounds like throwout bearing or the pressure plate took a ****.

Given the mileage I'd take it to the dealer and make a VWoA case for a replacement clutch.

Could be a throwout bearing? Diagnostic could be a small fortune. Have to take half the car apart to get to the throwout bearing.

Hope it's not thrust bearing on the crankshaft...good you're under warranty, let dealership sort it out.
