It's a gasket... You can't use ****ing putty to try and fill in the gaps... WTF.

not to mention there are supposed to be spring bolts on this flange..... shop is refusing to fix it.

and if you're wondering, yes it's leaking from there and yes it sounds like crap.

If they set a fire near your brake lines, you may want to bleed the system. Heat causing boiling and air bubbles and all that.

They also tried to claim it's leaking because my motor mounts are bad... they're a bit worn but not bad.... and how is that relevant if the car is leaking at ****ing idle....

I’ve been pretty creative with exhaust repairs on crusty cars in my past, but never that bad. And of course I didn’t pay someone to do it.

I'm ok with putting up with rednecks so that I don't have to deal with rust. Regardless, the work you received was terrible.

you mentioned a shop did this. What does the rest of the work they do look like. Also hard to tell from the photos, but is the exhaust manifold rusted through as well? I could see a reputable shop say we need to repair all of it

You should open up Google Maps to the shop location and post those photos

I'd think that would be exhausting. Also, someone might just think you are blowing smoke.

Damn. I was hoping it would be the catalyst for a good result.

Work like this will galvanize pretty much any potential customer, although I am getting rusty in my older years.

Good thing there's an oversize crooked washer on there, wouldn't want those bolts to loosen and the flanges to gap apart.

You're really doing us all a disservice by not telling us how much you paid the shop to try to light your car on fire.

Hopefully not more than $50. That's what a muffler shop charged me to weld up some flex pipe joint cracks in my old car's exhaust.

Yep, they're usually pretty cheap. I came across a Flowmaster 40 series many years ago and my buddy wanted it on his truck. We drove up there with muffler in hand, asked them to replace the stock muffler with that muffler. We were done 15 minutes later and it was $40 cash.

Even when I had them build my exhaust for my F150 from headers back it wasn't more than $300, and that included a new muffler.

So the exhaust work was about $600. the entire midpipe and cat was replaced. Parts cost for just that cat/midpipe assembly are about $400. I've had other quotes from other shops at $900 for this job... So it was a good deal if it was done correctly. It's a direct fit part specifically for this car. I forgot to show the pictures of after I picked it up from the 2nd attempt for them to fix it...

I brought it back because it was obviously leaking and I explained to them that they clearly used the wrong hardware and gaskets... so I told them to use correct gaskets and the spring bolts that came with the exhaust... this is the result.... WTF..... I'm pretty sure that a: the spring bolts are fully compressed which isn't correct... and B: that the gasket is.... uhhh... UHHHHH

so basically the part they replaced is the entire thing labelled 5 in this diagram, the cat, the downpipe and mipipe is one big ass assembly.

I'm so agitated that this guy has the nerve to blame my engine mounts. Like I can put my hand up to this flange and feel the exhaust pouring out of it... and he claims it's only leaking "under extreme load"
So they wanted me to pay for new engine mounts. I feel bad for anyone that gets taken for a ride by these crooks.

here's the rest of the pipe.

Take it to a real shop for repairs. Should be able to clean that goop off, install the correct gasket and new hardware, and get it all together correctly.

Get your brakes bled. I'm willing to believe they tried removing that brake distributor thing by disconnecting and pushing it out of the way, and the fluid melted the firewall lining. Leave those guys a few ****ty reviews for their lack of skill.

      Yay rust belt cars.
