Twenty years ago today, I opened this account on the VWVortex forums (I had lost two previous screen names to server crashes in May of 1998 and August of 1999, but I didn't post much at all, mostly in the Mk3 forums). I was twenty-five years old. In the time since, I've gone through two dogs, five states, a marriage, and twenty-seven cars (including two Miata's and three BMW's, now up to 55 vehicles total, I think). Santana's 'Smooth' was number one on the radio (remember radios?), Toy Story 2 had just come out a week before at Thanksgiving and was number one at the box office, and as my office's network administrator I was up to my nuts in Y2K software patches. There was no Car Lounge yet, and there were only about five thousand users (I believe this username is member number 5,051 - in the summer of '98, I don't think there were much more than a thousand).

This is what I had in 1999, a '98 Jetta GL five speed, my fifth Volkswagen to that date (of what would total eight as of 2019).

And this is what I have now, twenty years later, a 2011 Nissan Leaf and a 1993 Suzuki Cappuccino:

(The 356 is not mine, sadly)

A lot has changed since then - automotive fandom, cars themselves, online communities, technology in general. I've met some lifelong friends on here, a couple of whom I consider my very best. It's an odd little corner of the internet who's time has probably passed long ago. Interesting what turns are taken, how things run their course.

In closing, I leave you with two pieces of advice, having learned from two decades of arguing with people on the internet:

      1. Be nice.

      2. BAN HAWC.

The real question is, how long will Vortex last?

Mines next week. Dammit I'm old. July 2020 is my 30th anniversary of when I started mountain biking. I feel better about that one

My account isn’t as old as some of yours but I’ve been lurking since early 2000, so almost 20 years. I was actually a member at Miata.net and found my way here from there. I was 28 and a newlywed. Since then I’ve been divorced, remarried, have two kids in HS with one graduating this year and going through college applications now. I’m on my 7th car. Include both wives’ cars and the number goes up to 12 or 13. Ironically, while most cars are very different between then and now, there are some exceptions... Wife 1.0 had a 2004 4Runner. Wife 2.0 has a 2018. They’re remarkable similar given their differences in age. The trucks, not the women.

Huh. Turns out my 20 year is today. Is there a support group for this sort of thing? It can't be healthy.

My 30 year MTB anniversary will be summer-ish 2022. Almost there.

I'm not too far off on that myself. It's been intermittent at times, but I was definitely into it during the reigns of Tomac, Missy, Overend..

Happy anniversary. It's nice to reflect. This place certainly is/was special. Before this place I spent a lot of time dialing up my modem to get to http://www.gti16v.com/ and hopping from one Geocities or Angelfire hosted VW enthusiast site to another.

nice. Mk4s got so much flack in the beginning but all the GTIs are special in their own right. I'd love a Mk2 16V or a Mk3 VR6 GTI. But finding one in decent shape is near impossible. Thus I'm on the hunt for a nice Mk4 as my next toy car. And as much as people love the .:R32, I'm thinking a 24v GTI w/ all the goodies from a 20AE would be pretty sweet for a fraction of the price.

I believe my 20th is next spring, so not too far behind. Things have definitely changed in that period, but I don't think the value of forums like these has passed--perhaps the technology, but I haven't come across anything that provides the same level of detail and interaction as a car forum. I suppose that's why they still exist. I'll probably keep coming to this place until the literal plug is pulled. If forums fail, IMO, it's because people lose interest in the topic and move on to something else.

As far as my own progression over the last 19.5 yrs, I've gone from all VWs all of the time to one VW and no real interest in the brand currently (a GTI/R would be nice, but not something I am in a position to buy at the moment). Cars have gone from fun and a great way to spend some spare time, to the beginning of the end of cars as I knew it when I started here. I went from school to a real job; from making very little money to making more; from having time to drive or tinker to a fair amount less time for that; from renting a crappy apartment for like $500/mo to owning my own house; from wanting a tow vehicle and a nice garage to getting a tow vehicle and being on the verge (hopefully) of the garage I've always wanted. Lots of ups and downs between where I was to where I am, but cars and this community have always been there as a great resource.

#2853 (also JB) was the best car i ever had. stupid timing belt/water pump maintenance and lack of cash flow at the time scared me into trading it for a mk5

i don't think i'm a part of any other forum this large that still maintains such a large following of OG members. everything's gone to facebook group hell in a handbasket for the most part.

The best part of this forum is that it's a bunch of car nerds who exist to bicker over car nerdery.

For the most part, we don't have idiots coming on here bragging about their "[email protected] new LAMBO!"

There's something about this place that manages to toe the line between being low-key, but also filled with a good bit of automotive knowledge, but also filled with enough humor and cool user cars that it sort of becames a "home base" for online car discussions.

I love it here. I hope it never dies.

The biggest issue will be that if TCL one day goes away, most of us will not know how to contact each other. That would be sad

I've made it a point to try and mingle with natives when I visit somewhere that's not home to me. By natives, I mean TCL members that reside in the city I'm in. So far I've got the phone numbers of just about everyone I meet, and we chit chat regularly. It's definitely not a forum, but it works.

In the end though, I'd too be very upset if this place goes away. I think of the changes I've gone through as a person, car enthusiast, the relationships I've gained and lost, and this place has been a constant for the last 12 years. I'd hate to lose that.

For sure. I’ve met hundreds of people from Vortex and TCL, and some of them I consider very good friends. It’s through this place that I have a lot of connections, so it would be sad if it slowly faded into that good night, but I think I’d continue talking to the people that I’ve enjoyed throughout the years.

Pretty much. I love how we have gone from oogling over 1.8Ts to oogling over family cars.

I don't even recognize the person who signed up as me back in 2000 anymore. And that's a good thing.

Sure, if you wanted your family to sit on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck.
