This generation of S-class has a pretty good reputation for build and reliability.. letís not kid ourselves, it still would be pricey if a major issue came up. But.. WOW thatís a lot of car for 29k.

      https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-...Type=spotlight

The refresh versions of these go for about double the price.. but this seems to be the going rate for a twin turbo V12 Mercedes AMG with low mileage. This is an INSANE amount of car for the price.

Iím loony enough to actually prefer the older 80ís and 90ís S-classes. But if I needed an interstate bomber, whatís better than this thing at this price point?

i guess if power and cushy-ness was the consideration, i think youre right theres probably not a lot out there that offers that combo at a better per dollar proposition than a depreciated s-amg.

but looking only to luxury, and less at the number of turbos, id be tempted toward something with a flying b or a flying lady on the hood. though itd inevitably be older than this s class.

Unless you live in Germany and have a 100km+ autobahn commute...I'm not sure I understand these.

As a cruiser, they'll be comfy and powerful but get terrible gas mileage. As a performance car, they're too much of a comfy boat to handle. Someone took one of these to a track day I was; sure, on the straights they could keep up with Z06s, but I doubt they took a single turn without a blue flag. As a long-term daily driver, there's too many potentially expensive issues.

On the "is this car cool" scale I'd get it a 8/10. On the "is this a car I would own" scale...0/10.

Well you KNOW I love those older British cruisers as well. But the S65 is more comparable to, say, an Arnage Red Label - which you can also find in this price range, and I drool over them.. but the Mercedes, in terms of parts prices, practically becomes a value proposition!

      but does it?

the arnage is going to have a pretty proven setup sharing something like nearly 30 years of basic chassis tech, and a massively simple powertrain by comparison.

the mercedes... well... not so much.

edit - im thinking of the later turbo Rs, not the bmw bentley.. my bad!

Oh the Turbo Rís are a sweet spot, no doubt. After helping my buddy with his Iíd say the parts prices are VERY reasonable, actually, and relatively simply made.

Not quite the road going executive jets that the S65 or a Red Label would be, but infinitely cooler.

If I was shopping for a DD and wanted that generation of S-Class, I'd just get an S550 w/AMG pack like this one for half the price.

      https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto...031851752.html

If I was shopping for a luxurious/powerful 2nd car (or 5th in my case), I'd do what others suggested and opt for something more special like an Arnage Red Label, etc.

VCG has a point, as the Arnage is cool..

But the turbo R is another level of presence. Not nearly as fast but plenty of speed for the U.S.

First of all, I actually like driving this generation S class. Very floaty and smooth, in a good way. I've driven a few S550's and S63's of this generation, but not an S65.

Problem is, you can't really use them for what they're really good for: cruising effortlessly at triple-digit speeds. So you're kind of "wasting" that insane power and technology; you're feeding the money pit but you never get to drive 150 around here, so what's the point?

If I needed an interstate bomber for $30k? I'd pick the car with the most comfortable seats, great ride, and great audio system: a newer Volvo I just did a quick search and there are tons of Volvo S90 T6 AWD Inscriptions under $30k--you can even find a few CPO's at that price. I'm not going to spend an extended amount of time above 90mph, so give me the newer, more reliable, sexier Volvo

CSB: When I started college in 2005 I had a 2000 Honda Civic Si (EM1, the DOHC VTEC coupe with 160hp). One evening I got on 101 in San Jose, and ran through the gears. I did my 8k shift from 4th to 5th and as I was slowly creeping past 115mph, I noticed a car come up next to me: a new CLS55 AMG. I had been full throttle for a while, and that Civic can barely do 120 according to the optimistic speedo. The CLS sat next to me for a few seconds....and then just took off on me like I was standing still

That's him. Years ago I almost worked for him. He thought I'd get too bored in his small shop after my time in the business. I was like bro, your F40 is parked outside of your office. I'm not gonna get bored around here.

I raced a tuned S65 coupe in the 599 into triple digits. I didn't pull an inch through multiple gears. Huge respect to AMG for building such an amazing car.

I can't imagine a better road trip than, say, Berlin -> Munich in one of these things. Engage warp drive across some distance with four adults and luggage and it'd still be quiet and comfortable.

Haha- that sort of thing happened to me on the autobahn in an S3 with some kind of giant BMW. I was "cruising" around 200kp/h and *shooOOOmmmm*

A lot of car is an understatement.

You get into an S65 and think, wow this is so comfortable, so cushy...and freaking huge. You proceed on your way comfortably and quietly putting through your neighborhood, and onto main roadways. Then you reach the highway, you hit the pedal. Your body sinks back into the seat, a demonic bellowing growl suddenly becomes apparent. The world flies past you with ruthless and smooth efficiency; in the blink of an eye you're well into triple digits. It's an insane machine and there are few things like it when it comes to the true 24/7 Jekyl and Hyde personality these cars have.

I'd be interested if I lived in Germany and regularly took long trips on the Autobahn. In the U.S., I don't really see the point.
