I saw a report today that TEN Magazines has discontinued the print editions of 19 titles:

      4-Wheel & Off-Road
      Automobile
      Car Craft
      Chevy High Performance
      Classic Trucks
      Diesel Power
      Hot Rod Deluxe
      Jp
      Lowrider
      Mopar Muscle
      Muscle Car Review
      Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords
      Mustang Monthly
      Street Rodder
      Super Chevy
      Super Street
      Truck Trend
      Truckin’
      Vette

Most aren't of interest to me except for Automobile.

Was wondering when all these mags would succumb to the internet.

Sad day. I have Truckin' magazines from the early 90's. They were like 300+ pages thick.

Same. I wonder if their journalists are impacted.

FYI: Automobile has an iPad app with a reduced subscription cost, but it's super buggy and crashes constantly. It has some neat features; you can page through an exact duplicate of each monthly issue (it looks like a PDF of the print version), but there's also a setting where it brings up just the article and you can scroll through it vertically. Again, it crashes constantly and has done so since I "subscribed" nearly a year ago. Doesn't anyone from the parent company actually use their products?

I'm only surprised that they were still in print.

I stopped reading Automobile when Ezra left for C/D, but this still saddens me.

Car magazines continued being published after Sport Compact Car folded in 2009? Why?

queue Nelson saying "haha, your medium is dying.."

Outside of Automobile which I think got drowned out by better players, these are simply brands that cover niches tied to boomers who are now too old to care about the hobby. As the boomers go, so do the magazines. For those who still care, they won't pay for content because tons of free/ad supported content is already out there.

Exactly. Automobile had plenty of moments of brilliance, but it was also a bit too snobbish & eccentric at times and carved too narrow a niche for itself over time.

As for the rest of those, there are only so many articles one can write on a '57 Chevy or a well-restored 65 Mustang. These were all formulaic niche magazines, and many were pretty redundant, spreading the advertisement pool pretty thin. I still love print magazines, I subscribe to a couple and hope they stay relevant for a long time - and I think they will - but on a smaller scale as there's only so much room in the market these days. Quality writing and production matter more than ever.

So which of the magazines will be the last standing in print form? MT? C/D? R&T?

Maybe we need a poll. Paging Ekaru....

I agree my friend. I still subscribe to MT & C/D and I'm under the age of 30, to boot. I still prefer a newspaper over reading news on the web, and brochures over PDFs, etc..

Automobile doesn't surprise me. Just like Autoweek they cut down on the number of editions per year. I knew they were having problems generating black ink after that move.

I'm still happy with Jamie Kitman & Robert Cumberford. Ezra was good though, but I don't miss him since I have a Car and Driver subscription too.

Going to pour one out for Super Street, the magazine that hooked me to the import tuning scene.
