So, made some progress on making the car legal today. It passed smog! With flying colors!
It took some doing to get the smog done though. I show up at my buddies shop, he had another car waiting for the dyno. So the 30 minute drive at 5k rpm was pretty much wasted. After the other car is done, he pulled up the e30 on to the rollers, goes to hook up the tach, and the wire leading to the coil hookup fell out. Thankfully, this smog shop is next to my buddies stereo shop. So I fire up the soldering iron, and fix the smog machine. As you do. Now that the car has been idling for nearly an hour, I go beat on the e30 like it owes me money for about ten minutes. Back on the rollers, passes.
Now to the next problem. The smog shop also does dmv work. Go to transfer it, knowing that it has back fees, I pepper my angus. But not enough. $903 to get it current. So, I hold off at the smog shop, as they aren’t dmv wizards to get fees waived. I quickly run down to AAA, which also does DMV paperwork, and had luck last time I had back fee issues. Turns out they changed their hours, and I show up 15 minutes after they closed the dmv desk. And they aren’t open tomorrow. So, I have drive to the next town over to try tomorrow. .
I have the clutch. I brought it down from storage. I also have two bottlecap wheels. I thought I had four but the other two vanished. That seems to be all I have left of my e30 days. I also have a set of the 16" 4 lug mini wheels that look kind of like a panasport design. I want to say they are 16x7.5

All Hail Andy?
No M logo, but it’s supposed to be weighted as well, and is more period correct. Also, it will feel like a vw.
Second, there is a clause for classic cars over 25 years old, which will waive both, and I only have to pay this year/taxes to bring it current.
According to the internet, the classic car clause is hard to get.
Just be glad this isn’t a truck, as that is a commercial vehicle, even a rabbit pickup. Those fees are much higher.
I picked up a set of BBS RAs to unpimp ze auto.
Now just to find someone to buy the 16s, and then I will get tires for the 15s. The tires are so tall, the low and slow crowd don’t want them. The wheels are too heavy for the 11/tents crowd. And the crowd with taste go blind when they look at them. .
I may have to separate the tires, as I think there aren’t a lot of 4x100 cars that take that big of tire.
Got my tags. Managed to get them to reduce it to 430. The clerk wasn’t buying that an e30 is a classic car. Apparently she has never heard of Radwood. I should have been wearing my e30 shirt. She waived the penalties, but not the fees. I am counting it as a win.
