If it's your kid, fine, your choice. But most parents are happy their kid gets to go to a college. The quality of the institution doesn't translate to the quality of the graduate.
I'm not looking at anyone else's history but my own, and only for my own kids. Everyone has their own experience. Furthermore, my #2 kid is looking at several small schools, and has/will apply to 11 schools in total. Only 3 are big state schools. Those small schools though, some are $60-70K a year all in and well known for their academics. It's not small vs big, it's known quality vs unknown. I look at present day data when comparing schools for my own kids, and take many things into consideration. The first being, "what do they want?" Then comes what will they study, how well does that school teach that, and how well can that school get my kid access to employment. The last factor is $$. My big school vs small school was based purely on the fact that the 3 small schools my son could have gone for free to, are not a Washington & Lee, Davidson, or Furman, to name 3 small schools in these parts. They are schools that you need to google to even know if they actually exist, there's my reason for being flippant. They are schools that you have to dig deep to find them on some regional list in the annual USN&WR rankings. And there's just no way in hell I'll let any of my kids attend one of those places even for free, if it's just a plain bad choice when they have other options that, based on the industries/places that employ their grads, provides me with data points that basically allows me to answer the following question of "Will my kid be gainfully employed or attending a solid grad school after 4 years?" <--- that's the only real goal, period.

Those small schools (for my son, 3 yrs ago), sure they have some data points showing grads that did good things, but overall they cannot compare to the access to industry/employment a UGA, UNC, VT or Clemson afforded my son. This is a 4 year investment meant to provide 60+ years of stability. VT engineering, for example...my family spent a full campus visit day there in November 3 yrs ago listening to where the seniors were going to be employed in June after graduation...and it was impressive as can be. All over the country, solid places like Google, MS, Space X, WS financial investment firms, Big 4 banks, Big 4 consulting, etc. I'm paying for that access.

      YMMV

Those types of exchanges sound like this to me.

Dan: Son, I just noticed that you are now tying your shoes.
Son: I know, I just learned ho..
Dad: Let me get this straight, you know how to tie your shoes?

Dad: Then why didn't you tell us you didn't know how to tie your shoes. Clearly you can.
      Son: But I didn't.

      Son: No

Dad: So why did you lie to your mother and me for the last six months. Do you enjoy wasting our time?

Some states, if you sign a 5 yr contract to teach in public K-12 afterwards....will pay for that education. Many of the education grads from the school closest to me (Winthrop) are going for free, knowing that once they get their teaching cert they are on the hook for 5 yrs in some SC public school. Not the most ideal route, but better than debt.

Replaced with machinery. Apparently prison labor became "cruel and unusual" or something lame like that.
