Correction -- the "lever" thing was just him changing the actuators manually under the dash to change defrost/front vent blower directions (electric motor must be dead?)

180k on the block and 60k on the head on this engine. If the thermostat and heater core do not resolve the problem then I will take the heater core out and look at it/replace it. If this does not resolve the problem then I am putting in the newer engine.

Also verified the turbo do spin nice and smooth. Now I need to verify the turbo is getting coolant and oil.

I’ve said it before, but...you are a brave soldier for taking on a project of this magnitude. I also hate all of the people who have hacked up this car before you.

Ah, that happened to my B5 as well. It's amazing how accidents like that seem to just happen with Audis.

What do you think -- remove the scale from the front bash bar, paint it black, or leave it?

So yeah... waiting on the thermostat housing bolts to get here then I can get the thermostat re-installed.

Also waiting on the heater core valve replacement to get here from Lithuania (again). There is a majorly weird valve thing going on with the heater core, and I also noted that there is DEFINITELY not hot air blowing from the AC. The previous owner mentioned something about a lever under the dash that he had to turn in order to get hot air? I'll need to investigate that more. It is looking more and more likely that i'll be replacing the heater core on this thing.

Hopefully you are replacing that housing with the T-stat. You can see the degraded edge, it will leak. The 2.8 had the same problem when they switched over to plastic.

I uhhhh... yeah! I was totally not going to re-use it. Nope.

      Order's in:

      New starter
      New therm housing

-- update later today to come. I need to figure out a way to create a coolant loop without the radiator in place to do one last flush.

I'm a little late to the party here, but, is it possible that muck in your engine/cooling system is actually Bars Leak fix? I personally hate that stuff, but lots of old folks love to use it.

More likely the plastic arm for the HVAC blend door has broken.

Eh, the servos can just fail too. I've had to replace 2 of them in my car... they just stop working. Currently don't have defrost... so.. probably another servo.

I didn't end up pulling the heater core -- I "flushed it" manually by hooking up a hose. We'll find out if I blew it out and need to replace the whole thing anyways since I put a lot of pressure through it. I have one on order anyways. This is something I'll look into some other time.

Will Audi Tradition ship to the US? Last I heard, they wouldn't.

Yep, no shipping from Audi Tradition to USA unfortunately. I could get a proxy in the UK to buy it then ship it, but shipping from UK is spensive as I am on the other side of the world.

Nope. Replacement for $13, no real reason to get the billet one as the OEM one is glass-reinforced plastic. I looked at it, but decided I am not trying to spend $100 just for the billet upgrade if I am going to be selling the car within a year or two anyways.

      Update:

Still no hvac valve for the heater core (from Lithuania) but that doesn't matter much, the car will run without it.

Plans for the day include attempting to remove the broken stem of the MFTS sensor and putting in the new one without destroying the threads, the putting everything mostly back together (sans-thermostat) as I wait for the thermostat housing. Coming on the 18th. I need to sand down the grille because I am a terrible painter and left some paint runs on it. Boo.

Random guy on Facebook ghosted me and I never received the airbox, so I am buying another one and a new front Audi emblem.

By the way, I go through paint very quickly, and the sky is currently orange from smoke.

OP, does that intercooler have thermocouples to measure inlet and outlet temperature?

I do this to myself, thinking about my old 200Q 20v wagon.

Can't believe I'd let go of something so cool and rare!
Can't believe I kept it on the road at all, either.
