The part numbers change over the years; typically the alpha suffix, denotes a revision. Looking on vw's parts site; I saw this: (NOTE: the part numbers "supersession"; showing previous part #'s, including your original part # 06A959253). You might search on VW's website; using your own VIN # or call your local VW dealer, have them confirm the right part number.

Air Injection System Air Pump - Repair or Replace
A failed air injection pump or secondary air pump will often have no noticeable symptoms beyond a check engine light, but it does cause your 1998 Volkswagen Beetle to operate inefficiently and produce higher emissions. Our technicians have access to manufacturer-approved repair processes and Volkswagen genuine parts.

Is there anything wrong with your original air pump; does it need to be replaced?

Pierburg, was the oem for VW; new not cheap but you might look for a used one or a good deal online. There are Chinese cheaper new ones; most reviews, seem to say, they don't last long but you could give it a shot.
