Last night was a wonderfully inebriated excursion into my past. You know how these nights start: a few buddies come by to (socially-distanced) catch up, talk shop, and wax poetic about previous car ownership endeavors. Remember that N54 335i, Mark? Oh, you don't remember how the HPFP failed three times on you, but you remember how she pulled ferociously on the highway? Rose-colored glasses fully dawned (alcohol helps), the conversation pivoted my way. "Hey Kaz, what happened to your old A4?" "You know, why did I get rid of that car? I never had a single issue with her!" Mostly sober, I now look back on this statement with scorn: cam followers every 15k, water pump o-rings, wheel bearings, carbon cleanings...I was perpetually working on that car. Here's the old girl, in all her 2014 glory:

With the B7 A4 firmly implanted in all of our minds as a pinnacle of automotive engineering, we noticed something peculiar happening across the street. Could it be? A 2008 A4 being pushed out of its driveway? Curious, we approached the group and peppered them with somewhat slurred questions. The conversation progressed in a direction that seemed more and more surreal. Unfortunately, things become hazy around this time. I woke up to this:

I'm still collecting details, but the best I can surmise from my buddies is that the car (2.0T, Quattro, 6 speed, 130k miles) needs front suspension work and a battery. It was going to be given away, but instead is now gracing my driveway. It also (apparently) fires right up with a jump, and runs quite strong. There is a front passenger wheel included with the deal, so now I will go outside to put it on and wheel her into the garage. I have no idea how I got here, or what I'm doing, but feel free to jump on this train with me.

There's definitely worse things to wake up to after a night of drinking.

Not bad. Could be turned into a fun beater for cheap. Hoping it doesn’t nickle and dime you to death. Enjoy!

For a free car you got yourself a pretty tasty spec, manual, S-Line with the good looking 5 spokes. Well done! As for the body damage that's a super easy fix, just swap over a black fender/bumper cover from a salvage yard and be done with it. Shouldn't be hard as black is so common w/east coast A4's. In for more.

It's sturdy and bolted to the wall. All harm went to me.

Update: the car moves under its own power! I coerced her down the end of my driveway, and back up the other side into my neighbor's garage. We let her run for about 20mins (poor car hasn't been started since October 2019), and all signs pointed to good news. That is, until we pulled it into the garage and got the passenger front up on jack stands. Coolant. Everywhere. It must have collected on the splash guard or frame rail: we couldn't see any evidence of leaks where it was parked last night, nor on the driveway while running. But being up in the air at an angle let the flood waters rush forth. She must have lost at least a pint in the short time running.

My best guess is the leak is coming from the coolant flange that's notorious on the back of these EA888 engines. The horrible flashbacks have begun. My neighbor is not too pleased with the discovery, and wants the car a) gone immediately, or b) fixed as cheaply as possible. We're now arguing over this project's likeness to the Dutch boy and the leaking dike. Are there more issues hiding? Will this turn into an actual money pit? Will I survive the wrath of my now angry neighbor? Stay tuned: will get back to this project after the holiday weekend.

inb4 the cops show up looking for a black A4 that was involved in a hit and run.

      J/K.

That's a great story, and hope it works out well.

And next time you get drunk with your buddies, aim higher. Talk Porsches, Lambos, etc. You never know...
