Right, and the term was here long before US slavery, as was the word "negro." Negro eventually became a term southerners used to call enslaved Africans, so it's no wonder that racists held on to that term and continued to use it in a derogatory, offensive manor ever since. Mature, civilized vocabularies deleted that word back in the 60s.

I just wanted to know if we also ruined "plantation." so I can be put it on the endangered list.

Probably throw it up there, along with Dukes of Hazzard.

And soon... my favorite Mexican beer.

Err.... No. Rhode Island enslaved Pequot Indians in 1637. 250 were sent to Massachusetts and Connecticut to be sold at auction. Plymouth Rock has 1620 carved on it. Roger Williams was expelled from the Plymouth Plantation in 1636 to found the Rhode Island and Providence Plantations so slavery was alive and well in year 1. Rhode Island/Newport was huge in the slaves/sugar cane/rum/buy stuff from England for the rum trade. New England had slavery using imported Africans. It's just not in the revised history books.

I have always understood "plantation" in the US to include slavery.

Brazil banana plantation, who knows. US cotton plantation, slaves.

Webster's lists "plantation" being used as early as 15th century.

That's why people are the first to be laid off when things get tight. Because the first thing any company should do when facing financial issues is eliminate their most valuable assets.

Former CEO of Burger King once said if you're going to cut costs, cut costs. Basically labor isn't a cost. If your staff is bloated with single-task employees (I just stamp things all day, whether or not there's something to stamp), obviously adjust accordingly. I've never liked the "we're missing our year-end target! Fire 20% of the workforce so we can hit our projections!" practice. It's an idiot's method of management.

Speaking of idiots... those Mr. & Mrs. Smith stand-ins... the protesters did break down a gate to gain access to the neighborhood. According to a tweet I saw that looked like the stonework/fencing in that area. I personally haven't travelled to St. Louis to verify this is the actual gate actually pictured that the actual protesters allegedly beat down.

To be clear, the author of the book rolled the puppies in soot to disguise them from the goons Cruella DeVil sent after them.

      I saw that image, too.

You don't need to travel to St Louis. You look at the StreetView at what's across the street and tell if it's the same gate or not. There's video of the protesters walking through an open gate, leaving the other one intact. When was it broken? Before the incident? Afterwards? Last year?

That's the only image of the broken gate there is, and I haven't found the source, just it shared 100 times as "the gate to their property."

There's a big difference between knowing the history of the place and glorifying/showcasing/revering/longing for it in the subdivision and street names.

In addition to the subdivisions and street names, there are still slave cabins and slave plantation ruins all over the place in the jazzier neighborhoods and golf courses.

One cabin is a gift shop ("Erected in 1803") that was on Retreat Plantation
      https://goo.gl/maps/ZcnJJbtNDRYb52Ww9

Check out the names of the courses at the local 5-star golf club that is on the same land as the old plantation.
      https://www.google.com/maps/search/r...a=!3m2!1e3!4b1

The road it is on is Kings Way, named after one of the families that ran Retreat
      https://georgiahistory.com/ghmi_mark...at-plantation/

Of course there is a street named after the other guy, Page:
      https://www.google.com/maps/place/Pa...!4d-81.3920781

Two other slave cabins are preserved by the local garden club and you can take tours of them, and yes, there's a subdivision with the same name.
      https://goo.gl/maps/vxvJKj4jeC7QDGuD7

Basically, the more you click, everything is all linked up together. Many of the subdivisions in question weren't even built until the '70s-'90s (the 1900s, not the 1800s) so there's really not an excuse other than trying to make a statement like "your kind ain't welcome in these parts."

I mean, I'm not the woke-est guy in the room, but I feel like you're probably okay as long as you don't name your road Jackson Trail and put an ornate, gold-leaf plaque at the end out by the main road.
