Thread: 2001 GTI VR6 Manual Transmission. Replace or Rebuild?

    1. 07-28-2020 10:27 PM #1
      Hey Everyone,

Just looking for some advice here. My gearbox recently started grinding going from 1st to 2nd. The shop I brought it to said I needed a new transmission within minutes. They showed me the car up on the lift, rotated the front left wheel, and there was a very noticable clicking coming from the transmission.

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience, and if they could share any advice.

Does this fit into the Second Gear Grind issues posted HERE?
Is this more of a replace or rebuild situation?
If replace, where would I even find a replacement? Are there any upgrade options I should look at instead of replacing with the same?
If rebuild, does anyone have any recommended shops in the NYC tri-state area?

      Any help is greatly appreciated.

      Thanks
      James

Could be as simple as a bad synchro ring, synchro sleeve, or freewheel gear.

Was the spin test done with it in gear or in neutral? Did they try the above test with the clutch pedal depressed?

I would drain some oil and carefully inspect it for silver glitter or chunks?
