As the title says, what was the factory fill? The online manual says it was G13. The expansion tank says G12.

Also, the online manual says VW 502, 503, and 504 for oil; yet the sticker under the hood just says VW 502.

I used my VIN to find the correct online manual. VW manuals are so vague that they are essentially useless for DIY. Lost my paper manual some time ago.

I'm not concerned about what CAN be mixed. I want to know what was originally put in.

After 65,000 miles, the coolant is just starting to get to the bottom of the "warning zone" on the tank.

When you call, they will always give you the latest revision. Also, you might want to see if you have a leak somewhere. You shouldn’t be losing coolant.

Yeah, I called the dealer and they said G13.

VW must have gotten a hell of a deal on expansion tanks if they were made back before G12+ and G12++.

It's a shame really because G12 is not compatible with the G12++ or G13.

I am wondering the same thing. Our 2014 has a G12 logo on the expansion tank but I am pretty sure our dealer refilled with the new stuff after the water pump was replaced. I still wonder if that is why our heater core was clogged at only 50K miles due to gelled coolant ($1000 repair).

Perhaps these expansion tanks were manufactured before 2010. VW loves saving cash on material supply.

G12 and G12+ are compatible. G12++ and G13 are essentially the same.
Ethylglycol and glycerin based coolants should not be mixed.
