      Hi There
Working on my grand daughters Jetta. 2001 Jetta, 1.8T, auto trans, AWD motor. Complaints of will not start, runs rough, difficult to keep up with traffic at 70 MPH.
      Obligatory auto scan pasted below.
I thought it was starving for fuel, ordered both O2 sensors, replaced fuel pump & filter just to make sure flow was adequate. No change. Sensors came in the mail, downstream was wrong one, sent back and installed upstream tonight. No change. Pulled MAF connector, RPMs went down and misfire seemed to stop. MAF? I had a spare MAF for a VR6 that seemed to fit, tried that. Seemed to run better cold, as it warmed up misfired and it threw new oddball codes. I got these:
      16514 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B1 S1
      P0130 - 35-10 - Malfunction in Circuit - Intermittent
      16486 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70)
      P0102 - 35-10 - Signal too Low - Intermittent
      17965 - Charge Pressure Control
      P1557 - 35-00 - Positive Deviation
17705 - Pressure Drop between Turbo and Throttle Valve (check D.V.!)
      P1297 - 35-00 -

So I put the old MAF back in. I don't think its the downstream sensor, but I will go ahead and install it when it comes. I was going to pull plugs and look at them, #4 seems to be the predominant misfire, the others will get 1 or two, #4 racks up a bunch. With the VR6 MAF in 1,2, and 3 recorded no misfires at all (looking at measuring blocks).
      Fuel pressure regulator?
      MAF?
      Bad injector in #4?

I'd actually suspect a bad coil. Symptoms fit, fine at idle worse as RPM's climb, misfire, sometimes random etc.
Almost identicle to issues with my sons VR6 of the same year

      Good luck!

      What about these codes?

      17965 - Charge Pressure Control
      P1557 - 35-00 - Positive Deviation
17705 - Pressure Drop between Turbo and Throttle Valve (check D.V.!)
      P1297 - 35-00 -

      Check the D.V. diverter valve.
      Check all Vac lines.
Check all air boots from Mass to turbo and all from turbo to throttle body.
Check all vac. piping to PVC under intake manifold. Hard to see but if you have oil blow-by and dirt stuck to it there is a problem.

Air leaks Vac or boost will cause miss fire.

      17536 - Fuel Trim; Bank 1 (Mult)
      P1128 - 35-10 - System too Lean - Intermittent

This is telling you air problem.

      Good Luck

Sure, i get it. I suspect these were created with the wrong MAF.
That said, I honestly try to knock down the codes I can - then deal with whats left.
A failing battery creates alot of strange codes.

      Good luck.

My plan of attack tonight is swap the MAF off my 2004 1.8T Jetta and see what happens before I spend more money on parts. If that doesn't fix it then I dive into looking for leaks and coil packs/spark plugs.

      Bet you get it

      Good luck

Swapped out the MAF first thing since it was so easy. No joy. OK, next was fuel and spark. Pulled coils and plugs. Could not get #1 out, few turns and it got real tight. Ran it back in. #4 had nasty carbon tracks running down the ceramic, so that explains why it was misfiring. Coil was nasty too, looks like it got wet, it was corroded. Ordered plugs and a coil off Amazon. Be here tomorrow.
I don't get the O2 sensor codes, unless the misfiring cylinder was spewing fuel, it was hitting the hot turbo and throwing off the oxygen level in the exhaust.

Coils are cheap from dealer. They had so many recalls that they are like 25 ea.
      Use NGK plugs.
      Good Luck
