Didn't the E60 sell more 5 series than any prior 5 series?

The E9x cars, universally lambasted for its styling when it initially came out, is now thought to be a good looking car...reliability issues aside.

The original bangle butt 7, I agree there is no saving, but the LCI model is still a good looking car to this day.

Honestly, besides the few of us that are fanboys ( and makeup a small number), people will buy the badge in droves. They don't care what it looks like. It's a BMW and they can lease it. It will sell volumes.

Hard to define Bangle era in fell swoop because there were some good and some bad designs. E46 3 series was universally liked. Flame surfacing turned out pretty successful and slightly ahead of its time. Bangle butt on 7 series was controversial and BMW quickly changed course toning it down and eventually disavowing it. Let see if they will do that with the giant butt cheek grilles.

I thought 2020 couldn't get any worse, and now BMW releases this. Please look at the M Performance front bumper and rear exhaust for a good laugh. Also: nearly 3900lbs and automatic transmission instead of a DCT. This car is a mockery of previous BMW M performance cars.

I can't believe they put canards on the bumper. And a pyramid exhaust

YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS STUFF UP!!

Here are screen captures of BMW's own performance parts, including a "higher performance" front bumper and a pyramid-style performance exhaust:

      Disaster from the beginning

Not to be all...like that, but this is a good example of how:

Focus groups make for bad design
homogeneous design teams make for bad design

      The Coffins Performance

I'm yet to pass full judgment until I can soak it all in ..... In person and on the road. Until then, I'm blasting down the highway in the E46 M3 with a permanent grin

Such a bloody shame cause the car would be pretty damn beautiful without the disaster that is the grille. It would have been a great reason to have respect for BMW again. Not that the last M3 was bad; that generation was just never my cup of tea.

      Would not bang.

Maybe it was already discussed but I'd like to see some flow viz on why they felt they needed that much additional cooling with the coffins.

At least that's what Socksless McSockFace said in a video.

That's just it. It isn't Krauts. It's Designworks, BMW's design studio based out in Cali. I've had discussions with some of their higher up employees about this; esp as Tesla w no grill is happening, cities are moving to ban ICE, and now BMW is just doubling down on GIGANTIC GRILLS FOR COOLING ENGINES... just seems super dated/stupid and won't age well. She didn't flinch. This is what they are doing. They're all on board with gigantic nostrils.

      BMW is dead to me.
