I'm taking the car to the dealer for the 2nd time to look for a rattle. The first time they thought it was the camera in front of the mirror and replaced all the retainers. It didn't start until they replaced strut bushings. It sure sounds like it's in the dash. I'm not driving that much but when I do it's driving me nuts. I'm just under 30k miles.
Really hoping they figure it out tomorrow. My best description would be like a socket rattling around in a small compartment when the car moves side to side at all.
But if you thought it was around the camera, or overhead, check the clips that hold in the sun visors.
It took me a month to track down a rattle ant the passenger sun visor clip was the culprit.
Never would have guessed.
I had a rattle that was driving me nuts. Thought it was coming from the gauge cluster / steering wheel. Eventually had to drive around my neighborhood with my son in the seat next to me. He leaned all the way over and listened....determined it was actually coming from UNDER the driver's seat (the sound was bouncing off the dash I guess). I ended up taking the plastic cover off the amp or whatever is on the floor under the front of the seat. Turns out there was a black trim screw under the cover that was just rolling around. It was such a relief! The lesson here is that the sound may not actually be coming from where it sounds like it is.
They dodged calls for a couple of days and finally called back. They said they had replaced the trim around the mirror and took it on a test drive today and the problem was gone.
Drove up there and swapped the loaner and it was evident it hadn't been driven in days as the car was completely dirty. You couldn't even see out of the windshield to pull out of the parking spot. So I cleared it and started to drive off and the sound is immediately obvious so I take it right back and the tech isn't available.
I called back a couple of hours later and they're saying maybe it's the dashcam. I offered to uninstall it and they seemed to waffle and say they don't know what's causing it and he's going to have to escalate to management.
I suspect they're going to call me tomorrow and either say they can't reproduce or it's the dashcam.
That camera is solid. I could remove it or you could even just hold it with your hand while driving to know it's not that. It's coming from inside the dash.
Ugh. I hope they aren't going to make me rip into it. It's unbearable. This started after they mistakingly replaced strut bearings trying to figure out a lower control arm squeak earlier this year.
Any advice on what I can do to convince them this isn't normal?
Is this sound coming from underneath the steering wheel?
I have a dash cam too and it never made a sound from underneath the steeringwheel until I brought my car into service for the cat recall. I have no idea what they all did, but at the end of the day I saw my dashcam was unplugged, they removed the fuse! So I had to add the fuse connector again and ever since I have a rattle underneath the steeringwheel. I can hold on to the plastic and it stops. I just don't know how to fix it.
Dealer has had my car since Sept 24th and it's becoming increasingly frustrating to get in touch with them. Anyone run into this? I still have their loaner. I've put over 1000 miles on it.
